what is this old thing?
    #11399011 - 11/06/09 03:02 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat: Growing near a large maple tree in healthy grass.

Gills: The gills are jet black.

Stem: The stem is white, somewhat pearlescent.

Cap: Golden cap with small bulbous nipple. Black gills "staining" through bottom of cap.

Spore print color: black black

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in PNW

I noticed these in the park yesterday and picked a few. They looked old then. I went back today to get some habitat pics and most of them were beaten to death by the massive hail storm we had overnight. The one specimen I was able to photograh was sliced in half. Looks like this patch has seen better days. The caps seem to be about twice as large as a lib. While the stem is about the same size.

PS. I've been readin' posts in this forum for awhile now and I'm blown away by how nice you all are to everyone. Thanks in advance!!

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

The funny thing is that they are old when they are about 1 1/2 days along....

I agree. The coprinoids are one of my favorite families.

Are you sure about that? Coprine poisonous, maybe. That only matters if you drink though.

I'm not doubting you, it just seems crazy.

That's funny about how this species autodigests. I am planning on cooking up my first batch of coprinus comatus growing by my door at work. I have about 20 minutes to drive home. I hope I can pull this off before they look like swamp thing's anus.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
