shaggy ink caps

driving through midlands (uk) today and found some shaggy ink caps growing on some grass by a field, ive read that they dont keep.. and they need to be used pretty soon after collecting, how soon? i gather they cant be dried? cant i saute em and keep em in the fridge until i want them... any ideas

I saw it was and it wasnt, i thought i had but i hadnt. i felt i could... but i couldnt... holy shiii man these are f*kin strong, i think ill just sit here till its over!

If they've started turning black then you've taken too long.

When I've collected them I often have to discard several that started turning in the 30 minutes to a hour since I picked them.

If you cook them (by whatever method - I usually saute them) then the process stops and they'll keep. So, get them cooking and then you can find longer term storage for them.

i'm convinced the solution is to bring some butter, camp stove and a saute pan out collecting.

haha that could work.  =P

i usually sautee mine in butter and them freeze them. that seems to keep them well.

wicked thanks guys... i was shattered last night and wanted to get out this morning... i think ive left them too long now anyway... ohwell back on the trail... been a nice couple of nights rain, not found much this morning but its been a bit wet. sun is shining now tho :laugh: hopefully things will pick up, getting a bit frosty this morning aswell think seasons almost up :frown:
