Just got a job!
    #11397852 - 11/06/09 02:34 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

The time has come to start paying off interest on my loans so I had to find a job. The two trades that I know the best are computers and the pet/aquarium industry, so I looked at jobs in those fields.

I applied to Geek Squad and interviewed but it was a no go because I wasn't gonna be able to work the Thanksgiving and Christmas shifts. Asked at a Microcenter and a few pet stores if they were hiring and they weren't. A neighbor tells me about an aquarium store about 20 minutes away that is regarded as one of the best in the tristate area. I go up there a few times and get to know the guys and eventually ask if they were hiring. They said I could fill out an application but made no indication that they were really hiring, so I figured it was a stab in the dark.

A few days later I get a call to come in for an interview. I felt confident after that point because I'm ridiculously well qualified for the job (not being arrogant, it's the truf). I get to the interview and turns out the owner of the store is a marine biologist. Kinda intimidating, but I worked in a marine bio lab over the summer. We talked for a fucking hour and 45 minutes during the interview last Thursday.

Just got a call today and I gots the job, woot! I'm going to be doing aquarium maintenance in upscale houses, doctors offices, hospitals, corporate offices, etc. I've done that kind of work in the past so I'm excited about it. The pay is only $10/hr, which is low for what I was expecting, especially because I know how much they make for me doing the work... But hey, you gotta start somewhere.

Woot!

Well, I say $10/hr is low because when I was doing maintenance in Atlanta the standard rate that the client was charged was $55-$60/hr. So marine biologist man is making some decent money off of me but it's whatevs.

I know I'm going to enjoy it. Only problem I can foresee is that the owner seems to be pretty scatterbrained, but I guess if that was really an issue he wouldn't have been in business for 15 years.

I'd express my congratulations but I'm bitter that I'm still unemployed.

Good going, I guess, you giant ginger monstrosity.

All seriousness tho, I love you, and grats.

I just setup a new plant tank.

I've gotta update my frontosa baby log.

Those bastards are giant now and males are starting to get their humps. Some are already larger than their mothers.

The second round of babies are still going strong, but the third round has already outgrown the second.

Can't afford new tanks so I've gotta sell em, and in this part of the state they get a hell of a lot more than where I used to live.

There's very few females though, and it's kind of upsetting.

in my experience it seems like with every business owner that I have worked with; the more reputable and hungry(business wise) the more scatterbrained they seemed

seems to be the trait of a hard working business, lol.

I was there too, in fact- I'll bet most of us on the shroomery were underpaid at some point in time. That's why I went back for a degree.

My sister is making $110K as a manager with an M.B.A
other sister is making $80K as a trainer specialist with a B.A and 15 years of experience.

Fucking ask them for more after the first week!

Those people make a killing and should at least make $13-14 an hour. Do they compensate your gas or provide a vehicle for you?

Either way, good job!

I definitely jumped back on that bandwagon, but i am still only in freshman year so i have a ways to go. I am looking into also becoming a research assistant, for some actual work related hands on experience in my field, but that doesn't actually pay, it is essentially an internship.
so just that many more hours to come off of my check.

it should be worth it in the end, I can only imagine the field of physics becoming a much more prevalent and mainstream aspect of general society in the future; i.e. computers, engineering etc.

to Gumby... are you also going to be doing actual installs?
...or just maintenance and repair?

I'll be doing installs and moves too. I managed to fuck up my back some how, so I gotta get that fixed before I move around any tanks. A 150 gal tank weighs around 350lbs, so I could really fuck my back up even worse.

I've been doing the research assistant for the past 2.5 years, it can be pretty grueling work, but it's worth it. What kind of research are you doing?

Dystopia: nice to hear the Frontosas are doing well. How long did it take them to get the bump on their head? What size tank are they in?
