My first mushrooms have appeared! Now What?
    #11397001 - 11/06/09 12:32 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

So my very first mushrooms have developed. The cakes are made of brown rice flour and vermiculite and its almost 7 weeks since they have been colonized, and 2 weeks since they have been in the terrarium. I have a ultrasonic humidifier and it seems to be pretty humid (my humidity guage broke, but it was consitently around 87% humidity.

One mushroom is growing under the grate. I am wondering, should I pick them right now? I just went away and came back after a few days and here is a huge mushroom or two.

I have also read about dunking the cakes in distilled water. Is this a necessity. Is it helpful? Should a newbie avoid doing something like that?

Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I believe split caps like that mean humidity is too low. Adjust accordingly (cover up some holes in your shotgun or something). Pick whatever fruits you get whenever their veil breaks, it seems to be the prevailing wisdom.

Ideally, your humidity would be around 95%. Try misting more.

Thanks everyone. I am going to take my dehydrator apart right now so I can remove the heating element, then I am going to pick them and begin the drying process. I can't wait to experience these bad boys and go to a crazy far away place!

Thanks for the high five. I can't wait for many more of these bad boys to come!

Flushing/Dunking? Anyone?

-Ian

Really? I read that heat will kill the active ingredients in the magic  mushrooms?

Why are you doing that to your dehydrator? Most dehydrators dry up to 140 F, and that's not harmful to potency (from the ones I've sampled).

Only extreme heat will harm the potency...like burning. People regularly cook with their babies or make teas. With boiling water.

over a certain temp.. most dehydrators are below that temp.. but I never get involved in those conversations. I use mine with the heating element.. a lot.. no loss in potency.

actually that is a good point, I always forget.. teas are made with 212f water.. dehydrators do not get that hot.. the boiling point is a good rule of thumb.. though temps can go much higher.

Thanks a lot everyone!!! What an incredible community...

Should I just twist and pull and the mushroom will come right out of the cake? Do I have to worry about hurting the cake? As I understand it, I am not supposed to touch the cakes at all, not even a little bit. Any other advice?

.. well, if the cake is done pinning.. it must be touched.. lol

Twist at the base, slowly.. then dunk and roll the cake for another pin set.

I think if you run the dehydrator for a while with a meat thermo you should have a good idea of the temperature it hangs out at. The only thing that could be worrisome is oxidation, but having heat reduces drying time so less overall exposure

yeah.. they sit 24-36 hours in there.. but I pack all the trays.. plus some. I think its fine.. at least for bulk drying. Eat 'em fresh when you can
