Almost colonized in burned jars (PICS)
    #11396916 - 11/06/09 12:16 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

So my first attempt at growing with BRF cakes and I had no protection on the bottom of my pressure cooker, thus burning the jars/substrate. I knew they were dark, but was too excited and injected the spores anyways.

Pic:

After this I started to realize how badly burned they were and pretty much gave up on them, but I left them in my room to see if anything would happen. Out of the five total, to my surprise, 2 survived and are almost fully colonized.

The mycelium is fighting eat through the burned substrate and succeeding.

I've never read of anyone birthing a burned cake.. are they going to still be ok? Will it create some new ultra-potent, genetically deformed super shroom?

What'll happen if I wait a few days until they are fully colonized?

OH, so it is colonizing the burnt part?  Just allow it to colonize normally.

Absolutely, I have known this for a while but haven't posted...
there is no doubt about it
burnt cakes are THE secret for making mutant super-shrooms :mushroom2:
they also start talking at harvest time...quite impressive

Yep, sure is. I'm just curious if there will be anything different from the colonized regular cakes and the colonized burned cakes.

nah, you just have a silly imagination...

Burnt "mushroom food" means burnt nutrients , also means composition change but why would anyone expect anything different from that? well I am done rambling.

I was joking about the super shroom, if you couldn't tell.

If you want me to restate my question it is "what is the consequence of burnt nutrients and composition change in a shroom cake"? Will they produce less fruit? Will they in any way grow different or fruit different than a normal cake?

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. Burnt = carbon, the basic building block of ALL life on Earth.

Besides, it might improve the flavor.

Once I was so drunk, I lit the wrong end of a cigarette. My bra said that I wasted a smoke, so to spite him, I turned it around in my mouth and proceeded to smoke it anyway.

I shit you not, tasted like pizza...

the burnt part is DRY and stealing moisture from the rest of the cake as the MYC created metabolites to moisten and devoure it.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Little update.. they are fully colonized (the mycelium covers the entire cake), but there is still a decent amount of that brown-colored mycelium in the bottom corner of the jars.

Should I just leave it as is, cut it off?

The burning probably dried out that area. I have grown on burnt wheat before. Check it out here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4649222#4649222

I have also been reading how roast grains are beneficial to animals, and I reckon it could make digestion easier for myc too.
