Do you get a new social security # when you change your name?

I wouldn't think so.  A name is a name.  A SS# is an identity.

Good question, but my guess is no?

How do we legally change our name anyway?  I've been wanting to do it for a long time.  I don't need to change the whole name just make it shorter.

No you definitely don't get a new SSN when you change names. If that was the case, a legal name change would mean you lose all your major assets, debt, etc.

--------------------
The story goes, or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
And so he called all the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black, it had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass

It would also make it super easy to drop off the grid.

Legally, you can use any name you want to, as long as you aren't trying to defraud anybody.
Easiest example is married names- Mary Jones does not need to file papers in order to sign her name as Mrs. Mary Smith.

If you want a full legal change, you'll need to file at the local courthouse. They'll have the papers and such, just go talk to them.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

Hassle?  LOL.  Surely you jest.  I believe there's two short forms to fill out and a smallish fee usually <$50.  It's actually easier than getting a license of any kind.
