Can BRF and vermiculite be a substrate for bulk?
    #11396334 - 11/06/09 09:54 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I've used the search button and cannot find a direct answer. If a BRF verm cake can grow shrooms right out of them can I use this as a substrate for growing bulk. I was going to mix 1 qt jar of WBS with 3 qts of BRF and Verm.

brf costs more money and will contaminate easier when used as bulk substrate. that is why it isnt used.

I think people have done experiments with this, none with success.  If you want to try it, give it a go, but like I said, it has not yet been successfully attempted.  I think the reason is because it loses moisture towards the end, so it ends up stalling.

People do bulk grows of colonized BRF, but I don't think there's any reason you would want to spawn to it.

For the cost of the brf proportionately couldn't you just buy coir from a local pet store?

And I always understood that brf was at the low end of the nute totem pole.  Wrong?

very wrong. it has the most nutrients of any of the substrates.

BRF must be kept completely sterile during colonization.  That precludes using it for bulk in the method the OP suggests.  Bulk substrates need to be able to be exposed to non-sterile conditions, something grains such as rye, corn, rice, etc., can not.
