Coffee Grounds. HELP
    #11396166 - 11/06/09 07:10 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

hey again all , im about to make 3 monotubs (first time trying  with grains). i have my corn already colonized and im about to make my substrate.

I want to use coffee grounds but i live in Italy and american style coffee (filter coffee) is like an insult for them italians. forget about starbucks and other coffee places like these . here there is only espresso.

Can i use espresso????

I dont know how to ask about coffee grounds in a cafe here coz im not fluent with language and its gonna involve alot of questions that i cant bother (reminds me my vermiculite adventures).

I have an espresso machine  but its gonna take me ages to make 2 quarts of coffee grounds with the little espresso shots.

Can i just go buy some coffee (NOT USED) from the supermarket and use it in my substrate?

I use espresso grounds. I save them each day. Let them air dry or they will get moldy. Or you can freeze them.

Doesn't really help you today though...
I'd say you could boil the coffee and then filter it through a shirt or something. You do want to leach out some of the caffeine and hydrate the grounds too.
But it's a shame to throw away good coffee. And really it's optional, you don't have to use it.

Not all americans buy cheap pre-ground coffee,
I only buy beans, Jamaican Blue Mountain for coffee water, and Lavazza for espresso.
Just from the espresso alone I can fill up l quart of grinds a week.

I have not tried coffee grinds for growing (I am a noob) but am interested in it because I throw so much in my compost pile every week.

I don't think there would be a difference between espresso beans and regular. I use my espresso beans for coffee when I run out of blue mtn.

So by using coffee im actually not gaining anything ? ?

I can do the boiling thing since i can find really cheap coffee here! But if it is worthless and doesnt improve my flushes i sould not use it.

thanks again

Oh, you are gaining something. The mushrooms like it and use it. But they can grow without it.
If the coffee is cheap and you don't mind wasting or drinking it, then go ahead and use some, you'll get better results.

Same is true of gypsum. It's great if you can get it, but if not, it will still work.

another thing that im troubled about now is that the tubs i found are 29 cm in height. The substrate will cover 9 , are the 20 remaining cm enough to get healthy fully developed  babies?

im left with the option to boil the coffee and filter it to lose some caffeine.

How long do you think i have to boil it?

Shall i let it boil with the water , or add the coffee when the water is boiling ?

Probably about like making coffee. Boil the water, add the coffee grounds, let them soak for a while. 5-10 minutes, maybe. Then strain.

Anybody it before? Got any practical tips?

I add freshly ground coffee to my substrate (straw most recently) during the pasteurization process. Then it has a couple of hours to soak into the substrate, and the liquid can be drained off. I saved about a gallon of my coffee/straw water and boiled it to rehydrate some coir, which was then mixed in with the straw and spawn. So far so good. I think there is still some debate on whether caffeine helps mushrooms or hurts them.

I just went through the same thing. I only buy pretty good quality coffee and saving it over time just wasn't practical. I also use a french press and the grounds are kind of huge.

Soo...

I bought some shitty folgers that was on sale for 2 bucks, threw it into some boiling water (about as much as I assumed the grounds would make), simmered for a minute, let it steep, and then let the grounds settle to the bottom of the pot. After letting it cool for a bit I sloooooowwwwlllyyy poured off the "coffee" leaving the grounds in the bottom. Strained a little more with a fine mesh sieve.

Spawned some WBS to this Coffee + Coir day before yesterday. We'll see if it works!

I think espresso would work. Really it's just a finer grind, not even a very dark roast.

Espresso is a method of preparing coffee (as I'm sure you know), and has nothing to do with roast. A lot of espresso blends contain robusta coffee as well.

I just did some Amazonians.

I just took these pics a minute ago. One casing has Pasteurized straw with verm and water crystals as a casing.

The other has Pasteurized straw and coffee grounds with the same casing.

THE FIRST 2 HAVE COFFEE GROUNDS THE LAST 2 DO NOT. Both were done on the same day with the same amount of spawn.

Like Doc T said It works with out, but it does seem to really like coffee.
