Panellus stipticus- very cool!
    #11395975 - 11/06/09 08:14 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

http://sporeworks.com/store/catalog/Panellus-stipticus--Luminescent-Panellus-p-16144.html

Brighter than you would think from the description. I have a rye jar going right now, and it's easily visible. Can't wait to try some different mixes. I've started a couple of cakes, too- I'll post back if that works out.

Man that is sweet. I seriously can't wait to start delving into some new edible and novelty species. Psilocybes only go so far. I can't wait to see your pics.

I'll need more jars before my little digi-cam is going to be able to take a pic of this. It's easy to see, but it's not that much light, if that makes sense.
It looks like the pics on site, but it's a brilliant color that is completely eerie.

I hope that the cakes work out, it would be fun to use them for nightlights. Or pints of rye alongside your sidewalk or patio for special events.

I was  more or less talking about the pictures once you fruit them, assuming that's what you plan to do. But I could easily see how that little amount of light would be hard to photograph and not really worth it. Cool grow anyway.

I'll see how fruiting goes- SporeWorks says they want a wood substrate for proper fruiting. But we'll see.

It would be easy to photograph the "glow" with a camera that has manual settings,  and a tripod.

I got a bio-illuminescent(ghost mushroom) culture syringe in my trick or treat box from sporeworks.  As soon as I seen that, I instantly was pissed I had to sell all of my photography equipment, it would have been really neat to get some good photos of the mushrooms glow.

anyhow, goodluck with this species

Oh, sure. Any old-style SLR with an Auto setting would probably do just fine. But an ordinary digital probably won't.

most digitals with simply turning the flash off will go into a slow shutter mode. If fixed to a tri pod in a dark room it should come out.. no blur.

No foolin'? I'll have to dig through my camera's setup menu.
I don't have a tripod but I can just set it on the shelf or something.

If you set it on a shelf for a flash/off slow shutter shot.  I would use the timer delay feature; that way you will minimize camera shake in the exposure caused by you pressing the shutter button..

yup.. lesson learned on that.. even on a tripod.. that finger shake from hitting the button will affect it.

Well, I'll try to get pics, but it'll probably be p to somebody else.
Meanwhile, I read somewhere RR said that Pan stip likes acidic media, so I soaked some rye in coffee and a squirt of lemon juice.
Five full half pints, each got some fresh LC, 2 mL each. I should know quickly if the LC is good and if they like their rye prepared this way.

again (squirt of lemon juice) brilliant.. but I would want to start checking PH when experimenting like that. However, makes perfect sense if looking for acidity.. if its true, then maybe there is a use for pine needles after all.. hmm?

Oh, I'll definitely do some measurements as the next step. This was just a yes/no test. (And I'm testing my LC syringes.)

Am I right in thinking this is probably a monoculture? (SporeWorks LC)
So well-constructed experiments are in order and may provide real answers?
