Finding new music
    #11394880 - 11/06/09 01:00 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

How do you guys find new music? I'm not looking for recommendations or anything which is why I put this here instead of the music forum. I find plenty of shit already. Just wondering what most of you do to get new shit.

really i keep my eyes and ears open for a band that i think might be interesting and throw their name into pandora.com...seems to work pretty well at branching out

I look for music/musicians/artists that have influenced my favorite music/musicians/artists.
and their influences' influences. and so on.

every so often I find a music I like by other means.
and then I repeat the process with them.

allmusic.com  and search through related artists/side projects.

Also I download a lot of torrents.  When I find someboy with similar interests I rape their files to see if I like any new stuff.
It worked better with peer 2 peer, but thats about all P2P was good for.

It's all coincidence for me.  I do keep my ear to the ground, but mostly I just ask people what's playing if I hear something I like. And if I find a person who's music taste is pretty rad, I try to listen to what they're listening to. It's not always spot on, but I do get a few hits sometimes.

So backwards instead of forwards? How did you get into shit in the first place? Or is it kinda like "I have all this newer stuff, I need to hear older stuff"?

Lately Ive been exploring using pandora.  Usually Ill hear a song I like that is new to me, then Ill explore the band that did it and then the genre.  Also I do what Envix does, I go back to the root of a band/genre I like then I trace along a different branch from that root.

Sirius and Pandora. And my music-snob friends.... who sometimes drag me to concerts where the headlining band features a musical saw.

usually friends/festivals

or

if you like indie and shit I would just go to pitchfork.com and go to best new music section and download a bunch of the albums.  keep what you like, toss what you don't.

influences don't need to be older. musicians can have influences that are current.
I should have said "music that my favorite musicians like"

and you can't really "go forwards". unless you have means of time travel and/or can observe the future.

Yeah I kinda realized that when I said it. Typically people mean something like say... shoegaze artists are influenced by the Velvet Underground, I'll go check that out or something like that.

Especially now though it's easy for artists to be influenced by their peers. Genres explode onto the scene in sometimes a month with all the biggest acts drawing ideas from each other.

I've noticed that phenomena lately too. It's awesome when you have like, this growning, changing music ball of talented people all rolling together and playing together and learning from one another. Pure magic when that happens and with tools like myspace and such, it's so easy to get in touch with your local scene.

www.artistdirect.com
There is also another website I went to, but forgot it.

Look up your favorites then look through the suggested/related artists that come up also and keep going and going downloading and listening as much as possible.
Also I meet people that also listen to music not on the radio.  Music they actually buy and download.
People in general have a huge horizon to explore.
I also DJ and setup recording studios for people so I kind of have an advantage.

I just know alot of people and love music so I ask people I know and people they know and random people.  Brings a good opening line for girls.....  Drunk girls..... Just joking it is not hard to start talking about music.

im pretty selective of what i listen to, but ill listen to damned near everything, it just has to be good music. I usually find music myself floating around the internet and recommendations from other music snob friends. I love being a music snob, it rules :whoo:

I find things on last.fm some times, and listen to pandora.

Sometimes if I hear a good song and it is a band I listen to but featuring whoever, then I'll try to find other stuff featuring whoever that person is.

I've heard of people looking up other artists on the same label.  I guess they're thinking that if the label likes the music they like then the label has to like something else they like.

i'm surprised no one has said blogs.  that's where i learn about 90% of my music.  my current favorite blog (not album dloading blogspot) is gorillavsbear.  dude has great taste.  the other 10% of my new music comes from friends both IRL and on the net (i.e. you and jonnywax/lukeboots).

p.s.  sorry i haven't sent anything out on the mailing list in like forever, but i'm not exactly dloading a lot of new stuff these days, what with only having a netbook.
