Is your way of thinking biased?
    #11394839 - 11/06/09 12:52 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Ok so this will fry my brain, im way sleepy right now. Earlier today I watched an old film with ginger rogers and Joel McCrea (1940)

I was thinking about how different today is compared to that era. Peoples way of thinking was totally different.

And I got to thinking about, because of the way people think today, could it be possible that my/your way of thinking about things could be totally wrong and possibly influenced by the media, or desensitization of things like violence, women, other people, etc.
Also you wouldnt even realize what influences your way of thinking either. So in essence your stuck in your ways but dont know your stuck or the ways your stuck in.

Its like being mentally blind. Im sure this could exist but its just a theory. That the way we think is influenced by many different unknown factors.

Something like that.. I wish I could just reset my brain so that nothing influenced my thought and i would be unbiased in decision making and thought.

Just from my own experience after starting to watch old films my view about women changed in a strange way. First off women then, actually wore clothing(which I decided is a good thing), Im a daily porn watcher(or used to be) and I realized I never looked at the porn stars as actual people in a video or women, just sexual objects.

Thats why I thought of this kind of theory ^ And it blew my mind, I think differently now but I know that theres a good chance that my other thought patterns are desensitized, influence, brainwashed whatever you want to call it by outside influences.

Your thoughts? Am I crazy? :crazy2:

we are all caught between forces.
being masters of our own will.
while simultaneously
being products of our environment

we can only try our best to find the safest equilibrium to cultivate life and love to the fullest, safest, capacity.

Or at least we're supposed to. Often times we don't do as we are supposed to.

Crazy? Yes

But I agree with what you posted. Truth is subjective. And cultural. We are heavily heavily brainwashed. We're so brainwashed.. that it's not even funny (i couldn't think of anything else to say)

Id agree with all of that. i used to know a quote... (like 5 min ago but i cant think of it) that went like "reality is an isolated experience", i worded it differently and i cant remember if someone else said it first lol but it sounded better with the other wording.

Tim Leary said your brain feeds on input. Controlling the input controls the mind.[to an extent of course but i get the feeling he meant more absolutely] (also paraphrased as apparently i suck with quotes tonight)

"The future exists
first in imagination,
then in will,
then in reality."

Barbara Marx Hubbard

Short answer: no, not ultimate truth or "real" reality.  But I am in touch with my brain's interpretation/map of reality.  That's all you really need, of course trying to see into others views is a key to developing awareness and empathy.

Found some reality quotes while searching for that which ive forgoten!

Are you really sure that a floor can't also be a ceiling?  ~M.C. Escher

There is an objective reality out there, but we view it through the spectacles of our beliefs, attitudes, and values.  ~David G. Myers

There are no facts, only interpretations.  ~Friedrich Nietzsche

What was once called the objective world is a sort of Rorschach ink blot, into which each culture, each system of science and religion, each type of personality, reads a meaning only remotely derived from the shape and color of the blot itself.  ~Lewis Mumford

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.  ~John Lennon

There is a fine line between dreams and reality, it's up to you to draw it.  ~B. Quilliam

Man I swear Im getting more retarded thinking about this.

And if this is all true then is there such thing as free will, also :tinfoil: what if theres a reality that I can not see. If of course reality is relative?!

There is an objective reality out there, but we view it through the spectacles of our beliefs, attitudes, and values.  ~David G. Myers

Wow that dude just summed up my whole idea.

Another idea here about thought possibilities. If I saw a picture of a multilated corpse and in another time I never did. And the murder was found, in one situation Id probably ban the guy to hell and in another Id consider him both ways not guilty and guilty. Just based on whether I saw the pic or not. You know thats pretty influential.

So I think the mind just like someone said runs on inputs and these inputs determine your actions."could" but then free will would be questionable.

tl;dr

everyone has opinions.
opinions are biased.
therefore everyone is biased.

I was about to say something similar to that. Because peoples realities are so diametrical to each others, discrepancies occur between what they take as reality and what others understand as reality. This is in fact where disagreement stems from.

Ones reality in a culture that takes sacrifice to be "ok" may be unusual and taboo in anothers "reality" or way of thinking.
