Any de facto managers/workplace leaders out there?
    #11394606 - 11/06/09 12:14 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Not that I'm a manager.  But this fall I was put in a position of being higher on the pecking order -- and hence de facto middle management -- in the winery I work in.  Basically I recommended a friend to come work the harvest.  He turned out to be a lazy work-avoider who would challenge me on all my methods.  Never mind that I had been working there for three months.

Well, he knew how to push my buttons and I gave in emotionally more than I should have allowed myself.  In the end my boss started asking questions about my work performance (which was suffering from the stress of working with this "friend") and I had to tell him the root cause.  A week later my "friend" got fired.  Things have been much better at work now but I wonder if I might have handled the situation better by taking a different and somehow stronger leadership role.  Does anyone have any input for me?  Longtime lurker here.  Feels good to post.

I've been in management, project manager for a concrete company, had
an entire division of my own, I was really reluctant to hire friends
they quickly came to understand that I expect more from them because
they are my friends and I'm less tolerant of bullshit out of them
there were several that didnt work out and each time the pres would
ask why I let them go, I'd explain it and he'd say "they were your
friends though, you're supposed to look out for them", he'd usually get
the response of "I hooked them up with a good paying gig that doesnt
require a shitload of hard work, they should have looked out for me"

rules are simple, show up for work
when you're there, do the work
call me if you're gonna be late or out

That's it.  the rules are simple.  and one important rule to remember is never get your friends hired.  period.  i felt pretty betrayed by his utter lack of respect for the company, my boss, the work, me, etc...  and of course it reflected poorly on me.

i still wonder, is there a way to assert oneself and lead a person effectively with such a strong personality; someone with ego and independence?
