Your opinion on Casing..

Everyone seems to have their favorite methods, and pros and cons of each different tek for casing. Im going to be trying casing for the first time soon, and am really baffled at which one is superior. What do all you pros suggest the easiest, and most successful method will be. A 50/50 or coco coir are where im leaning right now...

Just stick with a straight 50/50 peat moss and vermiculite. Maybe add a dash of oyster shell if you can get it. Put a layer of moist vermiculite on the bottom too. That works well with little dissapointment. In my opinion anyways...

don't forget to add a little lime to lower the pH to protect against contaminants as added precaution. It can be had for $2 a 50lb bag at the big depot.

Alright, thanks for the reassurance guys. How many 1/2 pint colonized jars per tray (ill probably use disposable cake pans) would you recommend? And is lime...the same as hydrated lime?

I just did a little comparison, and although it was small scale (i.e. only one of each!), I got some results of sorts:
50/50+ (oyster 15% and lime 4%) and pure coir both colonised the casing layer faster and thicker than either straight verm or 50/50 with nothing added. I think the verm one dried out a little quicker, too.
they're all still pinning, so maybe yields will end up all the same. best of the lot (fast, thick and bigger fruits) was with the one where I soaked the cakes before I cased them.
Anyone else done similar recent casing research? we could add all the results together, and maybe it'd become mathematically significant, or something. i dunno...
good luck!

Hey, thanks alot Shirley, let us know what you find at harvest :P I think i will go with 50/50 mix with 4% lime, and 15% oyster shells. But where can i buy lime...What would i ask for?

derrayld, I think I read somewhere that you always use 6 inches of substrate. how big do your shrooms grow? and does temp play a bit part?

Over at nansnook i was just reading that i should do a 50/50 casing with verm and coir and not worry about lime, as the coir would take care of any PH problems. Opinions?

Do you need a pressure cooker to sterilize 50/50 of peat and verm or coir and oysters? or could you put them in the jars and just boil them in your pot?

yeah the micro works great! i started using that method when sterilizing my peat moss and verm+ lime, and to answer your question about pastuerizing its a good idea with your peat and whatever else your going to be using as a casing layer, but of course if your casing you should know that already.
