Anyone listen to Pat Metheny?
    #11394312 - 11/05/09 11:32 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I cant get this song out of my head, if you could describe pure joy with one song I think this would be the one. Any Metheny fans out there?

What album is this from?

I just picked up The Way Up yesterday because someone posted them playing it live and it was amazing.

I've been a fan of the very first Metheny Group solo record for a few years but haven't explored much else.  I also like the one with the RV on the front though it's a bit cheesy.

I've also got Joni Mitchell's records with him on them and quite like those.  Come to think of it, I've picked up several used Metheny cds/vinyl that I've never even listened to.  This phenomenon is true with Metheny records more than any other artist'[s records I have.

I see the stuff and I go "Ooh, Metheny Group" but when I come around to listening I tend to pick something else instead.  Probably because some of his stuff feels a bit anemic - the energy of the music is unique and subtle but when it really takes off, man!

I plan to get into The Way Up this weekend.

I've listened to the song x album he did with Ornette Coleman which was ridiculous and made my head hurt. he uses a ridiculous synth which matches up with the sound of ornettes horn which was pretty dope to hear but too much for me personally.

Yeah, initially I was intrigued to hear some Ornette Coleman but now I'm now wary of it in any form.  I downloaded Live in Paris and it was terrible.

The Way Up is one of my favorite all time albums. It's so fucking gooooooooooood. His album Daytrip with McBride and Antonio Sanchez is quite good as well.

I don't listen to much of his earlier shit, just seems too... cheesy? for me.

Oh man, I feel like I've just stepped into a bar or cafe filled with old friends.

I know every phrase of Bright Sized Life.  I just love sitting back in a chair right between the speakers, closing my eyes, and hearing every glorious strain peal off his fretboard. I must look like I need help, laying there twitching with every accent.

...and Jaco's bass!  ...and Bob Moses' drums! They sparkle.

Like the "Gold Teef" quote in the sig., too.

Have to admit I'm getting a little teary here.

Thanks for the post, I'm very glad to be hearing the OP's song for the first time.

Any of you guys like that Chick Corea album Light as a Feather?  It's like the theme music to the Price is Right on Venus...and acid.

Heelllllllooooooooo!!!

...but wait -- that's a different "first album" than the one I know.

I thought Bright Sized Life was his first.

Yes:

I think you're gonna like this Roy!

...and I just looked it up.  This is the first Pat Metheny Group album (1978)  Bright Size Life is the first Trio album (1976).  (Oh what a magical year)

Okay! I think I have a scratchy vinyl copy of that somewhere -- maybe I was deterred by the surface noise...obviously need to have another go at it!

I'll drop this here for the benefit of others -- might win over some converts:

It is definitely an album I would want to hear without surface noise.
