Psathyrella
    #11393269 - 11/05/09 07:05 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I potentially have some psathyrella, which is not "active" (as far as containing psilocybin or psilocin) but the experience of ingesting it sounds pretty amazing. I realize this is PROBABLY not the correct forum for it...but I was wondering if any one has any experience or knowledge about it? This is the wiki on it:

"In the BBC series "Ray Mears' Wild Food", Gordon Hillman related an incident where he was accidentally given a sample of Psathyrella instead of edible mushrooms. After consuming the mushrooms, Hillman drank a glass of beer and suffered an adverse reaction, suffering blue-and-white monochrome vision followed by memory problems and breathing difficulties. Hillman recovered after having his stomach pumped.

The looping memory problems Hillman experienced are similar to those caused by consumption of Amanita Pantherina."

somebody else figured to eat something unknown, and went blind for a day, i think that was amazing too, but it wasn't psathyrella - i think i read something like clitocybe did that

whatever turns you on?

I saw that program and don't believe what he ate was a Psathyrella species, I suspect it was a Psilocybe species but they thought they would hide the fact just in case the kids got ideas and went searching for Psilocybe species, that's the impression I got anyway!

I always call Psilocybe Psathyrella.

Officer:  What are you picking today?
Me:  Psathyrella.  I study them under the microscope.  Its really boring but everyone needs a hobby.

Haha, yeah, the way they were acting when describing the incident really makes me think a Psilocybe species was the culprit!
I'm going to use that if I ever get asked:cool:

Somebody should start a Officer: "What are you picking today?" thread

*shrug* I've never had monochrome vision. The memory looping sounds about right, though.

Yea its real useful when picking at universities.  A lot of the features match too so a quick google search will probably show that you are telling the truth.

Agreed, similar spore deposit, similar macroscopic form of the fruit bodies, it's a good cover!

Maybe the dude was accidently given a coprinoid instead of a psathyrella...

And I doubt the cop would go to his car and use google search to see if you are lying... "Hey boy. How do you spell satharilla?"

Pretty much any mycological speak sends the police away, at least in my experience.

I considered a coprinoid mushroom but there is no way it would alter your vision!

i'm familiar with the Hillman incident, and i'm convinced it was a misidentification.

since there had already been a mix-up over which specimens where which, it begins to seem all the more likely.

hillman himself does not study mushrooms, and is primarily involved with ethno/archaeo-botany.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I agree that it was a misidentification but I think they knew it was a Psilocybe species after the incident had happened but didn't want to mention the name!
Is it possible that through drinking alcohol the blood is thinned and the psilocybin is absorbed into the blood stream quicker?
inski..

the primary indicator of a Coprinoid was the consumption of a pint before the symptoms presented. it should also be considered that the amount of time between eating them and going to the pub could well have been right for the onset of Psilocybe intoxication.

i don't suppose it does much good without the opportunity to interview him or the mycology department about it, unless somebody knows of documentation of an inquiry.

I think it is worth noting that the symptoms disappeared after stomach pumping.

Wouldn't it be too late if it was psilocybin (or maybe coprine too, for that matter)?

Sure, I have projectile vomited after drinking too much overly potent tea before.  The effects wore off dramatically after puking, but not entirely.  Just like when they pump your stomach from drinking too much alcohol, typically there is still plenty in your stomach waiting to be absorbed so overall, it lessens the effects.
