humidity too low?
    #11392070 - 11/05/09 06:22 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

ive seen some posts from a while back stating that they dont trust their humidity reader (hydrometer or something). i dont trust mine because it was a $6 thing from walmart that i got with the intent to read temperature.

well i just put the cake sin the FC, and the humidity wont go above 60%.

its very moist in there, there are beads of water on the sides, the perlite is moist... should i maybe cut the foil down to minimum perlite coverage?

here is a pic, maybe something for the experts to work off of...

something wrong with the chamber maybe? any feedback would be appreciated.

The hygrometer in my humidor won't read above 60%, even when I know it's in a 100% RH environment.  Follow that link and see if it'll go above 60%.

Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper  he names of friends who were near?
What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream?
What does the sound of a screen door mean?
Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind?
How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church?
Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried.
Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does,
it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

well i got the humidity up to 85%. taped up some holes moved it into a warmer room and placed a shotglass of water in the corner (is this a bad idea)?

I would use 4-5 inches of perlite also is there holes all on the bottom of that FC?. There should be and also the FC should be raised off the ground so air can enter the bottom holes.

The shot glass isn't a very good idea.  Standing water is an invite for contams.  Try a bubbler, I garuntee it will work.  What is a bubbler?

A medium size glass or jar of clean water, I prefer distilled, and a fish tank air pump with an air stone.  Put the air pump outside the terrarium run a hose form it to the jar of water and have the air stone on the end of the hose.  Set it in the water and let it bubble away.  Works like a charm.  Other then that a Repti-fogger, or sonic humidifier would work best.

Just a couple more thoughts.

definitely  have holes on the bottom add more perlite and raise it off the ground so air can get underneath. standing water is a no-no.

thanks for the responses. i took the shot glass out. it was in there for about 14 hours, hopefully it didnt affect anything.

can i take the cakes out and add more perlite? or would that hurt the growth process?

i do have holes in the bottom, and i have it elevated off of a box using a lid from another container.

Adding more holes will cause the humidity to drop, which is not what is wanted. I'm not sure how you're going to keep the perlite from falling through the bottom holes

im using fine perlite, so im amazed it isnt falling through either. i was not intending on aadding aditional holes.

i think it was jsut an issue of a slow registering hygrometer. its at 97 now.

now i just have an issue of some off coloring that i will have address in the contam forum.

thanks for your help, everyone.
