Can't stand wbs, about to give away my 20 lb bag of wbs
    #11391854 - 11/05/09 05:49 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

well, its not really 20lb any more...

but anyways I have been working with rye for quite some time now , and I wanted to try wbs just because it was cheap.  Over here rye is expensive and I have to pay something like 3$ for every 2 quarts of rye.  Let me tell you this... I would rather pay 3$ per 2 quarts than use wbs ever again.  Not only does wbs take hours and hours and hours to dry, but if you cook it sometimes it will just be a gooey mess and I may have messed up my pot.  Rye does not certainly cause any of these problems and takes so much less time to dry.  I don't know why people use WBS, the cracked corn is a huge mess and a big waste of time.  If only they sold wbs without the cracked corn.

Ok I am done ranting right now, but all in all its worth paying extra / driving a long way to find rye.  I love rye!

This will change you.
How FooMan Prepares WBS

no soak, no simmering to watch or stir, no waiting for seeds to dry.
just consistancy.

i swear by this method but with a few modifications

you can order 42 lbs of rye offline for 70 dollars, just google "42lb organic rye". id give you the link but i don't think that is allowed here.

42lbs makes 60-65 qts of hydrated rye.

enjoy.

or you could do that. i get cruddy results with wbs. too much cleaning, too many floaters, too small of grain so it all compacts if you fill your bags too high, etc etc.

some people swear by it. i say do whatever works for you

I don't have a problem with either.  I Follow docs tek for wbs but Instead of letting it strain so long I just throw a handful of brown rice in the pot to suck up any excess moisture.

One thing that makes me say no to that tek is the fact that he only makes the wbs dry for a little bit of time.  From my experience, 3 out of 4 of my jars got COBWEB mold growing from them because the grains were still so wet.  And when I dumped the jars, the cobweb squeezed all the water out of the grains!!  The jars were SUBMERGED in water!!!

Yeah WBS is dirty, takes forever to rinse, and makes a mess in the kitchen. Check local Feed and Grain supplies along with Garden specialty stores in the area to get bulk rye. I get it for $.35 a lb in bulk or $.99 at retail price from the health food store. I hate WBS preparation.
