Best Grain/Seed etc...
    #1138670 - 12/13/02 11:36 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Hey I just saved up enough to buy a pressure cooker so I can move on from doing BRF to something else... I wanted to know as an opinion what Seed/grain would be the best to use. I know someone has asked this before but I cant find anything in the search so it cant hurt to ask unless someone is going to harass me heh. I have looked this up and its so confusing on what to use.
So much bird seed mixes that contain so many things... crazy...
Well so any words?

Grains are nice in my opinion.

Easier to mix, cheaper to work with.  The moisture content can be tricky but after you get the hang of it you'll have no problem (and trust me, its not hard to get the hang of).

You can still use your pressure cooker for BRF you know

With grain you're able to get more substrate at a better cost, more bang for the buck

No my question is really what is the best grain... by your suggestion.

I wouldnt want to waste my time with BRF considering Ive been wanting to get the pressure cooker to start grain

Certainly nothing wrong with BRF, is there?

I mean, you can keep growing mushies with BRF/verm substrate, and you'd get good enough yields, no?

BTW, how much did you get your pressure cooker for, and what kind is it?

I've heard wonderous things about millet.  I am no grain expert though, so I'd wait for someone who is to reply

No way theres nothing wrong with BRF and Verm but I mean when you go and get a pressure cooker and you've done enough BRF and verm to kinda bore yourself you want to grow to something diffrent, and in this case maybe better.

Which is the best grain?

Well, in a matter of opinion, millet

Rye is very nice, but a friend of mine thought it was tough at first to get the water to grain ratio correct. For some odd, unknown reason millet worked very well right from the start.

But as I've said, its just a matter of opinion.

Ok one more question,
St8 Millet or Millet based Bird seed mix.
and if str8 millet red or white...

If anyone is intrested I found this site with a great great price on Millet (50 lbs for 13.99!!) and if you spend more than $15 you get free shipping.

http://www.prdseed.com/

There prices are amazing... There a Finch Max mix that sounded intresting but I dont know how good it would be, heres the description what do you guys think about using it?

This premium mix packs a high nutrition punch in a small-seed mix that works well in tube-feeders or on the ground. With 14% protein and 17% fat, it gives much-needed energy to the birds. Compare this with typical mixes that provide as little as 9% protein and 4% fat. As with all prdseed, this mix is made up of only preferred seeds - white proso millet, shelled sunflowers, safflower and niger.

I dont know how much ive heard about shelled sunflowers being good?

thanks to everyone for helping me out.

Get a mixture of red and white millet with a bit of wheat or rye grass seed mixed in.
Good Mix.
Or just a mix of Red and white millet.

You only get free shipping if you live in Colorado or New Mexico.
Nice try though!
That would have been a great deal.

Parakeet seed........ with mostly blonde millet kicks ASS !!!!!. I use a pinch of agricultural gypsum in each jar to help prevent clumping....keep the grain seperate for shaking later to help mycelia spread faster. I also PC for 15 minutes.......then release the steam and get some pot holders and give them a good shake. Then back in the pressure cooker for an hour. Love this way now and don`t get jars of mush that won`t shake or seperate.  Inoculate with your favoprite strain after the jars are COMPLETELY cooled off. Then place in your incubator and let the fun begin.I wait till i see about 20% colonization in the jars before shaking. It will take a day or 2 for the mycelia network to recover from shaking but it will spread like wildfire then .  Here`s great bird seed tek link ~~~~> http://www.theforestfloor.org/archives/main/Birdseed_Tek.html

Arrgggggg No free shipping ::makes such a horrible face:: Well it was nice to think that while it lasted... But still with shipping and everything it turns out to about $40 if your in the U.S I think. So it still is a better deal then buying it from pet stores IF you need that much millet.

What about you whats the best grain recipe you suggest?

Just go to walmart and get Pennington's Wild Birdseed, its like 4 bucks for 20 pounds and it is a mix of red and white millet, sunflower husks, and some randomn pieces of corn and other grains. If you have a huge problem with sunflower husks, you can soak your birdseed mix and skim off the sunflower seeds.
