Yeah one of my favorites.
But one thing I have noticed about dogs is the more they have to adjust to this culture. Like us, they become sick.

What do you mean by adjust to this culture?
Dogs are more human than wild animals.

Yes that's what I'm saying. But dogs used to roam free in the streets. Now they are tied to obese, emotionally unhealthy, owners most all the time. I have really noticed this at the dog parks. Very unhealthy emotional dogs. It's quite yucky.

So true. In India dogs roam the coast or city in packs of about a dozen. They look alright, are keen, actively involved with their surroundings and not just begging around. They know their place amongst people.

Cesar Milan (the dog whisperer) noticed the same in Mexico growing up. He thinks most of us here are insane. And ya know...

people just don't understand how to live sometimes.
It's awful to see a vibrant pup turn into a neurotic mirror of it's owner.
But if we let dogs roam the streets, then wouldn't that cause all sorts of problems? Packs of strays, anyone? I don't think that would work in a country where we are so attached to our mutts.

Dogs in america need to learn to appreciate the art of sitting on the lazy boy and eating KFC all day while watching oprah re-runs, or they can take that whiney attitude to the dog pound!

I have let my dogs run free whenever possible. This IMO has only bettered our attachment.
However you are correct. We can't anymore just let them roam free.
Too many dog owners that use them for their unmet human emotional needs. Same for children. So I'm just noticing something and not expecting it to improve. Quite the opposite.

Yes! I think my mom just got a dog for that very reason. She lives alone and needed a companion so she adopted a dog from the shelter. The problem is that this dog is the type of breed that just wants to wander around all the time. He's getting out under the fence and runs around the neighborhood while she's freaking out about it.
My mom is ridiculous with animals. Every dog she's ever owned, that I've met, is just as affectionate with her as she is with them. But they're all strangely neurotic.....

would you say it's unnatural for dogs to be tied to their emotionally needy owners in this way??

It's true, sadly.
