I've had the front or back fans start to go back before but never the processor fan. Anyone know if this can be replaced without replacing the whole processor? I mean when you buy a processor they come together right? Has anyone had this problem before? thx!

replace the entire heatsink, which includes the fan.  They can be had for around $20.

yeah do this.

usually the stock heatsink is crap. i installed this one about a year ago:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118044

i saw a huge drop in temp and noise. highly recommended.

Sometimes you can remove just the fan and replace it. If you replace the whole heatsink, you'll also need some thermal compound, and you should google for info on how to apply it properly.

I just bought a bigger version of that Zalman cooler today for the new system I'm building.

appreciate the info folks !! I was thinking I would have to get a whole processor and then wondering if they even made them for this motherboard anymore lol I think this pc was made in 2004 or bought that year.

you probably wont see that much of an improvement if you swap the processor.

each processor has a specific pin arrangement called a socket number. you have to match the socket number of your motherboard with the new cpu. the processors with that socket number are all going to be in the same family (pentium d, athlon 64, etc). you cant dump a core 2 quad into a machine that has a pentium 4. just not going to work.

and chances are if you decide to do that youll spend about $100 or more and only see a 10% increase in power.

if i want to upgrade a processor in my machine i usually replace the whole motherboard. you will have to get new ram also cause the speeds wont be the same.

badass heatsink, comes with no compound.  I wouldn't use the compound that comes with it anyways, for very cheap you can get some stuff that is better.

peace

haha, true.  I don't know if i have either, but i build quite a many computers for friends and family, usually on the cheaper side as they really have no use for the powerhouses with 3x SLI and all that bullshit, they just need a $500 computer with good amount of ram and hdd space.

Anyways, the reason i use the better stuff is because almost every heatsink i have gotten does NOT come with any, maybe its because i normally use the same ones since they work well...meh, whatever, i will continue to use what works for me...

peace

I got Arctic Silver Ceramique bundled with my heatsink for just $3 more from Newegg. Cheap AND good, seemed like a no-brainer.
