It's probably the same as this species; Washington Psilocybe.

Quoted from sporeworks;

"Comments: Initially thought to be Psilocybe cyanofibrillosa but the presence of abundant pleurocystidia and the larger average size of the carpophores and spores indicate a different species. Microscopically similar to P. cyanofranciscana nom. prov. but distinctly paler in coloration and with a more northerly distribution."

Are those with the duller brownish dome caps different from the more orangeish saucer ones or is there just a large variation in the species?

Variation I suppose. Might send one off for microscopy, though I found many similar ones last year, some almost looked white.

yeah, those are friscosas. I've seen a few of those pale variety down here in friscosa homeland around SF. I think it actually has more to do with the substrate than anything else, nutrients, types of chips.

I remember one patch where one part of it was pale, and the rest were a nice normal color like cyans.

basically friscosas are cyans, same potency, just shaped different, and they can get bigger

You'll also have a powerful urge to eat sourdough bread and dungenous crab, ride cable cars, buy 'escape from alcatraz t-shirts, hang out in Golden gate park drum circles and listen to the good ol grateful dead while tripping on friscosas

......OK OK, Curecat!

I'll stop playing with the PNW'ers and go back to my cave

In my experience, fresh friscanas tend to be slightly stronger than fresh cyans. However, cyans tend to hold potency better after drying. Though, I'm sure potency varies from patch to patch.

I do know that I thoroughly enjoy the friscanas more than cyans.

These were growing in an area that looked like it was wood chipped, maybe, 10 years ago? Lots of broken down wood in the dirt but not very many chips or chunks of wood.

nay, you've just been getting slightly different strains from different nutrients and chips...different substrates can affect potency

overall they're pretty much the same as cyans..some strains can cross breed with cyans. if you were to chop up a bunch of cyans and friscosa into little bits, people would have a heck of a time separating them under a scope

basically, I've been mixing both of those up for years and nobody could ever tell the difference in the long run...kind of hard to tell when they're dried except for the big obvious ones

Agreed, I used a friend's microscope one day and looked at cyan gills and friscana gills and couldn't see much difference in spore or cystidia size/shape. The only real noticeable difference is that friscana usually have, on average, slightly larger (1-2um) spores.

:strokebeard: Those look very similar to Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata. A slight difference in the shape and color but you said you found some that were almost white. Ovoids turn white as the mushroom ages and dries. just not supposed to be in PNW

These never have an annulus. I'm 100% sure these are just a Ps. cyanofriscana variant. Ps. cyanofriscana are known to lighten up as they dry too.

I was just going to say that about the absent annulus.

Cool mushrooms there Blimey.

 I didn't know that, it sure is the land of actives there

I have found some without an annulus but probably due to age and weather. 90% do have it.

Just got excited and overlooked that

Doesn't look quite like cyanofriscosa to me, the stem is thin and it dries differently.

Maybe real close though.

I would call it Psilocybe sp.

here's a recent example from near San Francisco. It's not the best example, but you can see characteristics of both cyans and friscosas....It's probably merged

I've seen all kinds of variations like this. Thin stemmed, thick stemmed, long and short stemmed. In some places it's become sort of a generic cyanfriscosa, not really any distinct shape

but it's all good
