Wild maitake clone on agar MYC appearance
    #11382421 - 11/04/09 09:23 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

We got a huge 10 lb cluster of maitake at work a week or 2 ago. Before we hacked it up for a wine dinner , i cut out a nice piece from the center. I started up 2 plates with this after washing with h202 , they have some myc like growth coming from around the maitake pieces, but is very thin/wispy. Is the maitake myc very thin at 1st?
Thanks

Mssr. Stamets says that it is unusual to successfully fruit a wild G. frondosa clone.  I wish you luck.

If you are looking for images of mycelium on agar, Mssr. RR has posted images in the past.  Also, I find the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection to be a great resource for images of mycelium on agar.  They have two maitake photos here:  http://kacc.rda.go.kr/eng/menu2/img_list_resultnew_result.asp?l_code=2759-10-1-4-2-3-2-1-2-1

Funny, I did nearly the exact same thing. My mycelium is also very wispy where you can see it but can also see the agar under/between the thin strands of mycelium. One of the dishes is now filling out, whereas the mycelium where I put the tissue is growing thicker/whiter. I have also had this with lions mane where it looks like some kind of thin contaminant at first then progressively gets thicker after much of the plate is already colonized.

I had great luck from a wild fresh specimen growing out on MEA, but I bought a nice cluster from the store and it grew shitty.. really thin.
