Stupid Computer Shut-Down Issue
    #11388595 - 11/05/09 02:21 AM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys

Im having a issue with a nice big expensive computer I bought recently...

its a gateway desktop that i bought about 6 months ago, and up to this point have had no problems

this week for some odd reason, whenever im NOT on the computer, it shuts off...

basically I can be on it for hours, no problems, no overheating, but as soon as I get up for a few minutes or hours it turns off by itself.

any possible solutions you tech-savvy guys can think of?

thanks

just go into your power saving settings, which is on your screen saver contol panel.

it might be set to go into sleep mode after about 30 minutes to an hour of being idle

here is a pic of what you are looking for... if this is indeed the prob

Complete shutdown or reboot?

Try this either way.

If this is what is happening you'll need to figure out why after by looking at your system logs.

But surlsy the Motherboard is going bad, refund that shit, ASAP. Spend the few extra hundred dollars you saved buying a 500$ machine and get one that isn't going to crap out 6 months after you purchased it. Build your own Machine. its not hard at all, you get a much better warranty(manufactures warrenty for Crucial ram is life time, Western Digital is usually a 5 year, go with Intel motherboard, its like 3 years, Intel CPU is impossible to destroy) and you got us and GOOGLE to help you out if you ever need a question answered.

You could also have a driver that is crapping out when you resume from stand by/sleep, check out Gateways website, sometimes their driver server goes down, probably because they're using Gateways. Did you check the event log to see what is going on?

Also did you add anything else after you bought the computer, ie. more HDs, Video card? Unplug them if you did, see if it changes.

Gateways tend you start crapping out at 6 months to a year, Cheap power supplys take out the mother board, the only gateways I see that are older than a year at work are about 5 years old P3's, after that era, I believe they got bought out by someone else, who made them into the POSs they are today:

Gateway has always been crap, even back in the mid 90's... I got screwed by them once, on a large bid, and have hated them ever since.  They won a low bid contract for high end workstations that were supposed to have all SCSI components.  The hard drive was SCSI, the tape backup was some piece of shit driven by the floppy controller and the optical drive was IDE.  Anybody that buys a Gateway deserves what they get.  Junk.
