Newbie Demystified --- The Start of Something Big?
    #11388427 - 11/05/09 01:31 AM (7 years, 11 months ago)

So here's the deal, this is my first time growing. These attempts include cakes and grain spawn. I've only had one contamination in a single jar so far. I started the BRF jars the second week in October and inoculated the grain two days ago and some today. I'm posting some pictures to show you what I got and to inform others of the progress and techniques of the "newbie" if they inquire.

Pictures include: My own Mini Fridge Tek, Spawn, and Fruiting Chambers(empty).

Fridge is heated by a household 60watt bulb in a reptile lamp fixture - this is hidden behind the foil in the bottom and hangs from the rack above. Within the lamp enclosure I have taped up folded sheets of foil to reduce the likelihood of any surfaces of the actual Fridge from being burnt/melted. The heat is regulated by a "Zoo Med Reptitemp 500 R Thermostat" which turns the lamp on/off according to temp. Another digital thermometer is used to check the actual temp because the thermostat doesn't have a read-out; only low-high settings. The temperature probes are taped to the top of the Fridge. The temperature inside is always between 80-84. The foil everywhere prevents the light, by the lamp, from touching all the jars. The middle rack can handle about 11 quart jars, there are 9 of them in there at the moment in the picture.

This is some of the jars/bowls I started mid-October with brown rice flour and vermiculite. The Fridge wasn't setup until about 2 weeks after I inoculated these. They have been growing really slow. These are 4 weeks old and about ready to fruit. I will do birthday cakes for some and inoculate bulk substrate with the others.

These are going to be filled with stuff real soon ...At least one of the top ones for the time being. The glass terrarium on the bottom has a custom plexi-glass door setup that I made. There is a 3-inch tall section of plexi-glass that I put an inch behind the door glued to the ground and the sides of the terrarium so perlite and water is better contained.

Looking good but what are you going to use the terrarium for?

The terrarium is going to have perlite on the bottom and it will hold 6 nine-by-nine inch foil trays of bulk substrate. Inside the terrarium is a Flukers digital thermo/humidity reader (can't see that from the picture though, it's small and on the inside back wall).

I expect to have air exchange from the spaces on the left/right sides of the middle door panel. If that isn't enough I can drill holes on the front covers and door.
Since there is going to be a few trays in the terrarium would that mean I should have massive air exchange, or, will the cracks around the door suffice? Or, can't I open the door and fan it once a day? I am new, but before I have trays any improvements would obviously help. Thanks for yours "truskool", or, anyone's advice/comments.

on another look I would suggest more holes in your shotguns a hole should be every 2 inches.  That terrarium will defenitely need some sort of holes in it the cracks will not suffice

The two tubs are going to be each used singly with perlite on the bottom and the lid closed. The lid also has holes. With your advice I will add more holes on each container and all sides.
The terrarium: Should I put holes everywhere on the front (like a checkerboard) or just near the middle to the bottom? Would the terrarium then be a reliable fruiting chamber, or, will the air exchange pose a problem since there are only holes on one side of it?

The bottom of the shotguns too.  the more spaced out the holes are the better for the terrarium.  what is it made out of?  Glass right?

The plastic 64qt tubs: Can't I let the soaked perlite sit in a little water at the bottom without holes with a small concentration of hydrogen peroxide? Otherwise I would have to put a tray under these containers so water doesn't get everywhere.

The terrarium is glass so I can't drill that, but the front is plastic so I can drill holes there.

perlite wont leak after its fully hydrated and then fully drained.

you need to have holes on the bottom to let the air currents gradually release the water you put into the perlite.

thats kind of the whole point.

keep the shotgun chamber elevated a little.

it really isnt messy at all.

Then in the front is where you will find some growth, it will wind up being a waste of space.. looks like the beginnings of a nice glove box though.
