Verm size/grade for PF TEK

I searched and couldn't find a specific answer...

I'm gathering materials for a first grow and found a nearby place that has vermiculite in two sizes: grade 2 and grade 3. Which would be considered ideal for PF TEK?

According to http://www.vermiculite.com/ the higher the grade the finer the verm.

In general, finer verm holds more water than coarse. I've had success with both, but I'd say go with the finer one.

Finer grade verm is better IME

I like fine grade for the filter layer and chunky for the  substrate itself. :shrug: If you feel like buying both.

I like the medium grade the best.

the small grade does do a nice job for the top layer like Doc said.

i also have a question relating to this topic i have a bag of verm and it is almost like a powder its very fine idk the grade but is this like normal/fine or should i get a better grade or what

Thanks for the help guys! I went to the Feed place but they wound up only have a HUGE bag of very course verm for $23. They also had an even bigger bag of perlite. I said, thanks anyway and left. I thought I'd drive out to Lowes and see what I could find and voila! Not only did they have the perfect size verm (medium-fine) and perlite, but it was pretty cheap too--less than $4. I got 2 bags of verm and 4 bags of perlite for about $20. I asked the lady if they had any simple hygrometers, but she said they ddidn't. I told her I'd guess I'd drive out to Petsmart to get one and she told me there was a Petco right next door (D'oh!) So I walked in and got one there for $5. I love one stop shopping!

All-in-all a successful trip!:smile:

I buy the large bulk bags of verm. as I find they contain small and large sized verm.
Never hurts to have extra around anyway.
