Don't be facepalming people just for innocent questions man. I take 5htp, it's nothing that you'll trip on. It might give you a detailed dream or something though or perhaps make you feel more like waking up in the mornings. Also, melatonin

It increases mood too. I'm not talking about pill or two  one of my classmates took 1200 mg of 5htp and felt strong effects. But dont know can i trust him. Better ask.

when I take 300 mg of 5-htp, it does have similarities to tripping. similar spaced out feeling and saturated/slightly distorted/enhanced vision.

edit: and yes it improved my mood decently

Hmmm.. I haven't tried consuming it to acheive a tripping effect. Sounds interesting.

http://www.erowid.org/experiences/subs/exp_Tryptophan.shtml

it is most commonly taken after an MDMA dose because it is the precursor chemical to serotonin. however, the taking both 5htp and MDMA at the same time can result in serotonin syndrome, so it is not recommended.

taking it by itself is like taking a ton of vitamins. you are just going to piss most of it right back out. it is not an active chemical..

*the mood lifting effects occur if your body is low on serotonin at the time of ingestion, but there is a limit. your body won't produce any more serotonin than it would naturally.

sounds like a legit experience.
5-htp is converted to serotonin, you can assume a higher amount of a neurotransmitter in the brain would cause some effects and it does.

Just because you take it, doesn't mean that your brain is going to just start making more 5HT for no reason.  You need to take a Decarboxylase inhibitor like green yea extracts (EGCG).

really?
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9727088

"It easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and effectively increases central nervous system (CNS) synthesis of serotonin."

http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-794-5-HTP.aspx?activeIngredientId=794&activeIngredientName=5-HTP

"5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing the production of the chemical serotonin. Serotonin can affect sleep, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior, and pain sensation. Since 5-HTP increases the synthesis of serotonin, it is used for several diseases where serotonin is believed to play an important role including depression, insomnia, obesity, and many other conditions."

Really.

your body does not convert all 5htp that you eat into serotonin, just what it needs to maintain its basic functions.

tryptophan is highly concentrated in turkey flesh. do you start to trip balls every thanksgiving after you eat?

 @ tripping balls on amino acids.

If you think tryptophan's good, just wait til you get ahold of some isoleucine or threonine, man, those'll have you flyin' high in no time :hehehe:

First, there is a difference between Tryptophan and 5-HTP.  Tryptophan is an amino acid precursor to 5-HTP (and melatonin).  5-HTP can then be turned into serotonin.  Tryptophan will not get you high.  5-HTP might, though I'm not sure as I've never used it before.  Your body will not turn tryptophan into 5-HTP if your levels are already sufficient.

5-HTP can be used to increase the strength of a roll if taken in large doses on hourly intervals beforehand.  I don't know that it has effects on its own however.

Actually, turkey has a relatively average amount of tryptophan compared to other meats.  The sleepiness after a Thanksgiving meal is likely attributed to alcohol consumption and a large meal.

okay so you need B6 to convert it, that shouldnt be a problem..

also from the same page:
"However, several studies have reported that 5-HTP is effective even without a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor (e.g. carbidopa)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5-Hydroxytryptophan

you can keep facepalming as much as you'd like, but I'm not convinced at all.
