so i got a box of Ball brand ' plastic storage caps ' but i noticed afterwards that it says, "not intended for processing" and there is no little triangle on the box or caps. i can't even find the product on their web site. are these NOT the same as the plastic caps i see other people using with the syringe filter and such? i'll try to post a pic in a few.

yeah, and there's a # in the middle of it that stands for the type of plastic it's made of. 2 is polystyrene, i think 3 is polyethelyene, etc. if it's a 4 or 5 you can PC it. 2 or 3 will melt.

Use em! Damn things are the best. Pressure cooker and all. Reuseable and no worry about rust.
Easy as hell to clean, drill, grip, and i think they even do your taxes.

so i'm guessing they just put, "not intended for processing" on there because theres no band to seal the jar if you were canning?

true, there is no gasket on those but if you put a layer of tyvek under the lid this will create a seal for you

Thats what i do. Cut a circle of tyvek about an inch or two wider than jar opening. Plop it on top and put the cap on. I'm no TC, but i have had no jar contams and i've done about 30 jars.
WIth hole in the lid of course. Like an inch diameter hole.

Those caps work great for whatever you want to use them for (except canning).
After processing repeatedly, some of them may start to crack, but they do work great imho.

Plastic + RTV + polyfil makes some pretty lids.

The plastic caps(without gaskets) don't hold a vacuum, that's probably why their not recommended for canning.
Also, if using them on a LC, they tend to leak around the threads. if they sell plastic lids with gaskets it would probably help prevent this.

no facepalm needed, you've misunderstood I think.
I'm talking about liquid leaking through the threads of the jar, where this plastic lid fails to seal.
The LC I made had two self heal injection ports. LC leaked out when shaking.. I purposely put no filter on the lid (air-port syringe when needed), so that I could shake the LC violently. but these lids arent leak-proof.

You need a gasket. What could you use... to make a gasket?

put some of that silicone around the inside of the lid let it cure and you now have a gasket

wow... well, that would end up costing more than better lids with a gasket already on them .. my common sense threw that idea out the window
besides, a face-palm and a pic isn't really saying shit.. at least you two gave actual input like theother two have.
sorry for giving input by telling OP they leak.

No need to get all butt-hurt, I'm just clowin around.
One tube should be enough to do like 50-100 lids worth of a gasket. You don't need much, just a thin line around the inside. That's like an extra 10 cents a lid. I mean, I already use that stuff for my self healing injection ports and my tyvek filter, surely an extra cc per lid isn't going to kill me.
