Mycelium growth with pics and question
    #11383696 - 11/04/09 12:49 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Howdy,

Friend of mine has these jars.  About 20 inoculated 3 and 1/2 weeks ago.  Two strains. One strain seems to be doing better.  Some of the jars are almost all the way filled with white growth.  BRF and small grain vermiculite.

Some of the other jars are not even half way filled.  I know once the jar is filled all the way he should wait an extra week.  My question is how long is too long to wait for the jars to fill all the way.  I mean if it takes 5 weeks should he wait that long or just try again?

Silly question?

Yes that is what I figured.... time.  I did notice today that four of my friends jars have pins in the jars.  They are about 90% colonized.  Is this a very big problem?  Should I just wait till they are 100% then dunk and roll and not worry about the pins?

Here is a pic of said pins...

I believe if you have pins you can birth without dunking but don't take my word for that. But no I don't think it is a problem at all.

yes it is a problem if you have pins and the jar is not FULLY colonized then there is a contam. take out the jar and cut off uncolonized part dunk fruit

No, invitro pinning does not -always- mean contam.

If its around 80% and pinning you can go ahead and birth them. Wash off the uncolonized parts and do whatever you'd like with em.

it always means something is wrong! contam over cooked BRF or just to much water eather way not good. take out of jar cut off uncolonized part

Something wrong isn't always contam.

Now I agree with you, in the fact that it means something caused the myc to say "oops, time to spread my seed!" Contam is a scary word! hehe

As for anyone wondering what to do with their invitro pin cake, yes, cut out any uncolonized portions. Even if that portion has no contams, it might mean the myc taking the time to colonize that portion once out of the jar. That could easily stall pin production and also open up for actual contams while in the FC.

Don't make your cakes work harder than they have to!

Well, I guess it could have been anything he did wrong eh!  He followed RR mushroom growing guide pretty closely. I/he are new to mushrooms so I dont know...?

Things I think could have an effect:

Temp of jars during incubation... have not got temp as it feels warm and OK.  Guess he should check it.

Small grain vermiculite?
Lids are just loose on jars not tight?

Regular light bulb used close to jars for warmth?  Light making pins?

If any one of these sound like the culprit then sound off eh?

If anything I thought the jars had too little moisture....

My buddy got all excited when he saw the little buggers  :crazy2:
