Adding an aux input into my car?
    #11383688 - 11/04/09 12:47 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Would this be something I could do myself or should I just have it professionally done? I have an 03 Chevy Malibu.

so you mean like new stereo with an aux in?  it depends.  i mean.. what's your experience with cars?  do you have a friend with some knowledge who would be able to help you?  i know at least like 5 guys who have done it themselves... though i've never tried it personally.

Not necessarilly a new stereo, I just want to be able to plug my Itouch in instead of using a shitty FM transmitter or something else that fucks the sound quality. I don't have a lot of experience but I know a few people who could probably help, just don't have a phone right now.

Get a good deck.  Most new decent ones have aux/rca and even AV input.  My Kenwood touchscreen even has the ability to control my ipod and iphone through the screen, which is wicked sick.
My buddy has a kenwood that has a USB port on the front that you can just plug your ipod or mp3 player directly into it.

You can spend anywhere as low as under $100.00 or upwards to the thousands (if you like touchscreens) for a system that's compatible with USB/Ipods.

And for wiring, get a wire harness from BestBuy or your local car audio shop.  They're designed so you don't have to cut up your electrical cables behind the deck in the car.  You just attach the right wires from the harness to the deck, then plug the harness into the wire adapter behind the dash.  It's really simple.  It gets more difficult when you want to rewire everything and use Amplifiers.  In that case you have to run RCAs from the deck to where the amps are, then you have to run wiring from the amps to where the speakers are located (through doors and under carpet etc.), and get your balances right, get the equalizer properly set, etc.

Most have inputs in the back.  Even the cheapest ones.

Does your Malibu have a cassette player as well as CD, or is it just cd? If it has the cassette player you can just go out and get a $10 cassette adapter and do it that way. That's how I've been doing it for years and the sound quality is much better than FM transmitter, but not quite as good as if you have an AUX in.

Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box.

Nah, I wish.:frown: I've had one of those before and they are a lot better than FM transmitters.

I just found out my car has a hidden accessory outlet, is there an adapter I can buy for it to turn it into an aux input?
