Bulk substrate recipe , HELP Urgent
    #11382981 - 11/04/09 01:14 PM (8 years, 10 months ago)

Hi to all ,
its my first experiment with bulk  and i really want it to work!

I have 8 jars (750 ml each jar) of colonized corn. They are 100% colonized and i have to start the next step.

I've got at my disposal:

Vermiculite
Coir
Gypsum
Hydrated Lime (Crushed eggshells)
Coffee

***No access to manure***

I was thinking of using this tek : http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8324968

and making 2 tubs , using 4 jars of spawn on each

but i am posting this in order to get more ideas and also to get help and ensure the correct quantities of each additive.

Fact 1
From the countless posts that ive read i decided to follow a small ratio i.e. 1:2 in order to be quicker and lower the risks of contam.

Fact 2
I decided to mix my substrate and not layer.

HERE IS THE PART IM HAVING DIFFICULTY :

Ill prepare a mix of the ingredients i got and ill pasteurize them.
How much of each additive shall i use ? Plz provide answers in % because the metric systems across the world differs and i get confused.

Does this sound right to you?

30% verm
30% coir
20% coffee grounds
15% Gypsum
5%  hydrated lime

PLEASE CORRECT ME IF WRONG , GIVE ME YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND GIVE ME YOUR OPINION ON THE PERFECT HEIGHT OF THE SUBSTRATE WITHOUT CASING LAYER.

Tomorrow i have to go get tubs and prepare so there is not alot of time! thanks all

For any bulk sub recipe that uses "quarts" you can substitute "liters". Pint = 500 mL, half pint = 250.

This looks great you should have no problems.  IME 4' is the right sub height.
Doc has it right on also

Don't use hydrated lime in your substrate mixture and the % gypsum is a bit high, between 5-10% is best.

for a referance I use this mix for bulk sub

1 brick coir
1 quart verm
1 cup spent coffee grounds
1 cup gypsum
pasteurized in 1 gal water (brings it to field capacity)

and spawn 6qts to that giving me a 4" sub level in an 18gal monotub.

hope that helps a lil.

No lime. 1:2 or 1:3 is ok

Powers of two instead of powers of ten.
2 cups = 1 pint
2 pints = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon

I put together an excel spreadsheet that might be helpful... you could easily change from imperial to metric without any major work.  See sig.

Lime is calcium hydroxide. Oyster shell is calcium carbonate.

eggshells are not hydrated lime, but calcium carbonate. and the cool thing about it, is you can add as much as you want without it spiking the ph meaning you cant fuck it up.  and it gives a sub some texture for mycelium to tread through.

From my experience I have seen that the addition of large amounts of verm to a mainly coir substrate is fruitless.. resulting in gangly mushrooms of little weight..  I would suggest using about 60% coir, 10% verm, 10% gypsum and 20% coffee grounds...  Good Luck and Shalom!

And a 1 to 3 spawn to substrate ratio with a 3.5 to 4 inch depth seems to work splendid for me...  but this is me talking....
