Boris - "Sound Track From Film Mabuta no Ura" is a great one. Contrary to most of the drone/doom stuff they normally release, this album is an excellent showcase of psychedelic ambient. Mabuta no Ura (Inside of the Eyelids in English) is not a real film but rather the result of the band imagining a film in their heads and writing the soundtrack to it.

Another good one (also happens to be Japanese) is Flower Travellin' Band - "Made in Japan". This one is from the early 70's.

these are mostly heavy and largely improvised bands that have a lot of albums. This is the real mindfuck stuff.

Jaybird, Headress, or Rare Wood would be good places to start. Really anything you can find will either pique your interest or not.
If you ever get a chance to see them live definately go. Seeing them in a dim basement in albany was one of the best shows i've ever seen.

I have recently listened quite a lot to The Electronic Hole (self titled) which has upon it a rather good Frank Zappa trouble every day cover, which I only later found out was originally Zappa, and turned me onto HIS Freak Out album, which is totally awesome, if not so lesser known.

I definitely second Caravan, fucking phenomenal.  Especially their first three albums, but the next couple are still great.

Gentle Giant are awesome too but I never really considered them psychedelic.  Check out the band Gryphon if you're into Gentle Giant, especially their album "Red Queen to Gryphon Three."  Extremely complex, beautiful progressive folk.
