Additives worthwhile?
    #11381400 - 11/04/09 01:38 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Are there any additives worth adding to a cubensis bulk substrate?

Ive heard people have had good experiences with coffee but I dont think Ill both with it I havent used it before, would have to go get used grounds, dont know what grounds are good bad, if too much is bad etc..

Ive heard good things about gypsum but I dont know what it is, what it does for cubes or where to get it

I understand people use lime for pH but I dont understand pH for cubes. Will adding lime or another buffer make it the ideal pH regardless of the substrate?

Thanks

coffee speeds up colonization.
gypsum gives you meatier healthier fruitbodies.

when using coir / verm as a sub, no matter if you use coffee gypsum or not, does not need PH adjustment of any kind.

I use
1 brick coir
1qt verm
1 cup coffee
1 cup gypsum
1 gal. water

check my grow log for links and info on all your options

I got my gypsum at home depot in the garden center. Not sure if they carry it year round though. You can always smash up some drywall if you can't find it in the garden section. Seems like a pain in the ass though. As for coffee you can pretty much use as much as you want. Most recommend no more than 30%.

I think the reason ppl add lime or gypsum to their casing layer is to regulate the pH of the coco coir that most ppl use with verm as their casing, as coco coir is kinda acidic.

peat/verm + lime and gypsum is for casing.

coir/verm + gypsum/coffee  is for bulk substrate.

casing is not needed when growing P.Cubensis unless you have humidity issues.
