Flowhood Build With Stonesun (Pictorial) * 11
    #11382411 - 11/04/09 09:19 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So I'm pretty sure you guys are completely
fucking bored to see flowhood building teks
in the cult forum. , but there was a couple
of inquires lately on how to build one,
so I'll be brave enough and post mine here.
If you have any questions along the lines
don't hesitate to PM me for details.
It's been copied form my Journal, and it is
a long post...
Credit goes to all of you (especially: Boris, misted, Damion, etc.) of course!

I have built this relatively cheap flowhood a few days ago,
and wanted to share with the community,
hope to encourage some of you out there.
It is a small 12"x24" hood with a 99.99% HEPA filter.
It is perfect for the home mycologist, and you can build it
yourself for about half of the price as it costs online.
I can not believe how cool
it is to freely open a grain jar in the flow and do
some G2G transfer. Or do some agar work.
And you are not limited in your glovebox!

Well, here's the price breakdown:

  • 12"x24" HEPA Filter (delivered)          $150
  • 463 cfm Dayton Blower (delivered)    $95
  • Birch 3/4" 8'x4' Plywood                        $25
  • Trimming & 1"x1"                                    $10
  • Screws, Handles, Pre-Filter, etc.          $20

As you can see, the total was $300 for this
project. Actually it was a little less,
because I've had some screws and filter
material at home.

I could have went with some cheap plywood, but rather chose
the 3/4" birchwood,
because it was on sale @ the local HD.
I've done all the calculation ahead, and
the guys were more than happy to cut it up
for me for free.
I needed:
  • 2ea. 24"x16" (top and bottom panel)
  • 2ea. 13 1/2"x16" (side panels)
  • 1ea. 12"x24" (back panel)
  • 4ea. 10"x12" (blower cage covers)
  • 1ea. 12"x13 1/2" (top of blower cage)

Besides the panels I've bought:
  • 1ea. 8'  1"x1" Strip
  • 2ea. 8'  1"x1" Trim

I've also got some 3/4" & 1 1/4" Wood Screws and some brass handles and "L"'s
for holding the blower cage to the bottom
box.

Here are all the tools required to assembly
the flowhood.

I've got all the panels sanded down and
ready for some action.

Started with the side panels. Pre-drilled
all the pilot holes needed on each of them.

Then I went with the bottom panel, and measured 6" back from the front side, and
attached the 1"x1" strip with silicone and screws.

Did the same thing with the side panels.

Here you can see everything pre-drilled,
all 1"x1"'s attached, ready to assembly.

Time for the screwing!!!

On the top panel I cut the opening for the
blower, mine has 8"x4".
Then comes the silicone, and secure the bad boy!

After this I put a good amount of silicone
on the inner edges on the BACK of the box.

Attached the brass handles.

Time to build the top box, which is
actually the cover for the squirrel cage
blower. All holes are drilled, and at the
intake side of the blower a hole has been
cut to host the pre-filter.

Then I attached the whole top to the
bottom box with the brass "L" brackets.
I went with these, because I wanted to have
easy access to the blower, if something
happens to it.

Cut out the filter and secured it to the wood.
I have found this white piece of something
in my garage, and screwed it on to the side.

Let the trimming begin!!!

Now it's time to get that HEPA filter out.
Be very careful with it, and install it.
Push it back against the 1"x1", and secure
it with the trimming.
Ahh, I almost forgot.
Before you put the filter in, go ahead,
and vacuum all the crap out of the box.
I even wiped it out with alcohol.

Filter in place, started to trim in.

A little finishing touch.

And the finished project!!!

Thank you for your patience!

It isn't loud at all.
What can I compare to? Hmmm...
Like a microwave maybe.
Maybe not even that loud.

Damn I came to check out the flowhood, but like a few of the others, that school of jacks really got my attention... lol. Nothing more fun than tossing an artificial into a frenzied school of jacks or ladies imo. Now you've got me excited for the flowhood and this summer's fishing!

I like how you went through all that effort to vacuum that box out before taking the filter out of it and there is a bug sitting on your filter in that picture. :omgz:

Lol, don't you worry, took the bug out.:super:
Even if I've left it there it's out of the airflow.
You need to vacuum the box out before assemble, because of the dust,
sawdust and millions of other particles would clog parts
of your HEPA when you fire up your blower.

I just got back from home depot they cut out all the pieces free of charge. Thanks to your dimensions I just took it in and handed it to the associate and he cut the pieces out in no time. I ordered the blower and the hepa the night before last. Are there any changes or recomendations you would make now that you have had time to use it? I plan on assembling it on Saturday and if you have any additional advice it would be appreciated. myc

Scuse me for bring up the old thread, but I built a flowhood and noticed you fixed yours gasket side in, and so did I (thought it made the most sense)...

However, I noticed yours has a sticker that says TEST AIR FLOW with an arrow pointing towards the gasket which would lead me to believe it should go the other direction...

Mine doesn't have a sticker but its almost the exact same filter..

When looking at other flow hoods, the gasket is always on the outside... So I haven't noticed any problems using it this way, have you?

Btw, nice build..

I plan on making a flowhood just like the one you made, and was wondering if you have run into any contaminants yet? How is the flow w/ that blower? I got a Hepa Filter just like the one you got, so I was planning on also getting the same blower and wanted to make sure I did not need anything less powerful or more powerful. Thanks!

How'd that Dayton blower work for you at an inch of static pressure?  Grainger claims its practically nothing at .7 inches

Also does the space between the back wall and the hepa have to be 10 inches for a 24 x 12 flow hood? I am curious about anyone's input on that. It seems to be a commonly overlooked variable for DIY flowhoods

Noticed you left 10 inches for your plenum.  Would a 10 inch plenum be all you would need for say a 48 by 24 by 6 inch HEPA filter?  How do you figure what size to make your plenum?

If I could just figure out what size to make, or how to figure out what size to make the plenum, I'd be in business.

I have the HEPA, and have located an according sized squirrel cage blower fan.  Gathering the wood, silicone, screws, and tools needed is nothing more than a trip to the local hardware store.  If I could just figure out what size to make, or how to figure out what size to make the air plenum, I'd be in business.

Looking at this thread and another flowhood build thread I couldn't see anything that suggested any sort of pattern, or mathematical calculations in how to determine plenum sizes between the two builds.  The hoods where different sizes.

there's not a plenium calculation, it's just a box for the air to become pressurized so it can push through the filter in a uniform (even pressure) way leading to laminar flow. 6" is considered a bare minimum plenum depth but shoot for 12 inches.

Man, I really appreciate that.  Achieving 12 inches for an air plenum will not be a problem.  Thanks for your help.

My HEPA is 6 inches deep.  I plan on utilizing a pre-filter just not sure which one or what size it's going to be yet.  I will add the width of the per-filter I end up selecting to the width of the HEPA filter to determine how much room is needed for the filter, then be sure to leave 12 inches behind where the filter butts up to the trim for the air plenum.

Cool.  I'll try to bless the community with a thread of my flowhood build over the next month or so once I catch a break from work, and have the time to pick up the squirrel cage and hardware.  Thanks again, bodhisatta.  +5.

Old thread, but hey, its a great one! Question: Is the construction of a box for the blower necessary, or was that just done to make the whole thing uniform? As long as the outlet of the blower is sealed properly, you don't need a housing, correct?

Yea, the encased blower motor is modeled after Paul Stamets's series 3-4 flowhoods.  The series 1 flowhoods do not have an encased blower motor, and are therefore cheaper.  The trim around the whole hood was a personal touch by stonesun.

Hi Stonesun. Working on a flowhood here in the near future and I have a question about your build.

So you used a 12"x24" HEPA, and a prefilter. The standard inches of SP for a HEPA is .8 - 1" SP. So I doubt you have less than .9" of SP with this build. You should need a fan that puts out about 200 CFM at .9" of SP to get 100ft/m. Yet the fan you used only puts out 50 cfm at .6" of SP.

Am I missing something here? I don't think I am off in my calculations.

Thanks.

Awesome . . :bow2:

Technical question: looks like there´s a rubber thing on the HEPA backside, is that all that´s needed to seal it with the box? ('cause you mention no silicone here)

Thanks

Hey man, I would love to build something like this! I just have a question.

How do to prevent dust from settling inside the outer filter while it is not in use? I wonder this with all flow hoods.

Not OP, but I did this exact build years ago. I've always left the hood out and never worried about it. But I have thought
about this. I am at a point where I am ready to pop a replacement filter, so I was just going to make a cover out of thin
wood that I could latch on over the filter.

I've had to move this around many times, so it will also be nice not having to worry about dinging the filter.

Is that a Dayton Model 1TDR9 blower?

I also have a similar (but not as nice) build that i just sit out on a bench, optionally you could put a piece of cardbard over the front. Have a shitty tek on my build if you wanna see, its a cheaper setup (but not as good) than this one.
