Agar contam or myc...ID
    #11382406 - 11/04/09 11:18 AM (8 years, 15 days ago)

I cloned wild Laetiporus to agar and 10 days later have this...

I don't think this is the mycelium for this species. It looks like some other strange growths i've had on unsucessful plates...
Workman said in another thread it appears powdery and noticeably orange
Can anyone identify this growth for me? It's fairly shiny and smooth.
However, it looks to be turning an orangish in the middle...or maybe I just hope it is haha

Looks bacterial to me. I've cloned two L. sulphureus which both gave pale yellow, aerial mycelium with a powdery look. Sorry mate

Looks like bacteria and mycelium.

Drip some antibiotic over it and see what's left.

Good growing,

Jef

It was a while ago when I tried this. I think it was quite slow to colonise sterilized wheat for spawn, but when that was used to inoculate a fruiting block (oak sawdust/bran/gypsum) growth was incredibly fast. The blocks looked completely colonised after a week with great looking yellow mycelium. I left the bags for about a month to make sure the mycelium had a good grip, then opened the top on some and made slits in the side of others. Unfortunately I got no primordia formation in any of them.
I know of one person who has managed to grow this in captivity. She said you need to use a large block in a big bag. As chickens are big in the wild I guess they need a large substrate block to fruit off. I've also seen a Japanese patent somewhere, where they introduce a second wood-rotter like oyster to the chicken colonised block. I think the idea is that the chicken mycelium starts crapping itself over the competition, and is forced to fruit. The same method has also been used for S. crispa.

it seems as thought a nice big fat log would be the best and like you said introduce a fast decomposer to it...

Oh man! The bacteria stopped and now the mycelium is crawling out from under. Distinct veins of white! Beautiful...
I'll post pics after I've transferred.

I've had some that started out white, so I was convinced it was some type of contamination. It then began to fill out and get the powdery like orange quality to it. The same thing also happened with my paddy straw mycelium which is also an orangeish color.
