Shotgun FC not maintaining humidity?
    #11382023 - 11/04/09 09:29 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,
I'm currently fruiting in a shotgun FC for my first grow. It's currently at 80% humidity, however, instead of 90%+.

How wet should the perlite on the bottom be? I have about 3 inches of damp perlite. At first, it was so wet that it leaked out of the holes and I had to put towels down, but now it is no longer leaking and just feels damp. Is my perlite moist enough? Should I add more water?

If it's not the fault of the perlite, should I try sealing holes using duct tape? If so, which sides of the shotgun FC do you recommend sealing first to increase humidity and still get FAE?

Thanks.

Don't seal holes, that just hurts things. A shotgun relies on air movement to work.

Three inches probably isn't enough perlite- add an inch or two. You want to have it wet but it doesn't need to drip. Standing water isn't useful, you need the water to be in the perlite so it evaporates properly.
Roger Rabbit explains it all in detail in the videos: http://www.mushroomvideos.com/

Do you have a hole drilled every two inches all the way around all six sides?

True. And make sure it's up on something so air moves around all six sides.

I had similar problems recently

Can you add another 2" of perlite?  That should help a little, it did for me.

Is the bottom elevated to allow air to draw in? I think that helps draw cooler air in through the moist perlite, raising RH% in the warmer chamber.

If your FC walls are dry due to the temp differences in/out of the container; You can mist the walls, and lid.  this seems to help maintain the RH as it evaporates into the air
