First time grower
    #11380017 - 11/03/09 08:53 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

hi since this is the first time I'm doing the grow i have a few unsolved questions.
I'm using brown rice flour , vermiculite and normal tap water for my cakes.I will then boil my cakes rather than using a pressure cooker, due to money circumstances.
One thing I'm not entirely sure about is how much spore i should inject into a small half pint jar?

about 1/4th a CC in each of the four holes. Search around buddy watch videos, read, and repeat. Don't grow until you know what to do without reference.

Welcome to the forums, they've helped me alot and are still helping.

I don't think boiling is good for cakes...using coir in trays or even as a monotub seems much easier and cheaper, imo, than the pftek, and you get much better yields. With coir you can simply put it in a pot of water and heat it to about 160F for a few minutes to pasteurize it and it's ready to go. You can bypass buying jars, verm, brf, and all that. The only useful thing (if you're using trays) that you'll also need is perlite, which you can get at any Lowes or Home Depot.

How Could you possibly only use Coir? I've never heard this? Seems like if that was possible everyone would.

the biggest reason that the pf tek is so popular is because you can use steam sterilization.
what are you suggesting you use as spawn?

I've also done research on boiling and i found out that if using BRF boiling is fine because full sterilization is reached before 190 and boiled water is around 215. So if i leave the cakes it to boil for 90 mins i should be fine.

it is possable but pointless BRF has more nutision in it so why do it.

Larger yields, easier and cheaper ingredients.

Without a PC, a simple spawn bag with WBS or grain is easies, perhaps somewhat expensive, but a 1:3 ratio would I imagine stretch it out.

Buy them online and have them shipped?  That would be pricey, but it would work.  Do you folks not preserve much food over there?

Home canning is very much a US thing. Other countries do it, but not like we do.

aneil, there are plastic containers that work well. Member Veda_sticks has done a lot of research into it, so have others.
The search engine will have a lot of info, if you put a little work into it. Start from the Big Search Page: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php
If it has a recycle code, it'll usually say PP5 if it can be used.

Hey Bud,

Yeah go with the PF Tek when you start but make sure you can do it all without reference to any text or video while you do it.One wrong move could spell disaster for your cakes.Evn though im a beginner i've been reading and researching for the last 6 months and im only starting on cakes now, because guess what thats what everyone starts on, start on the most forgiving tek and work your way up to grain.Thats what the majority of ppl do

Best of luck!

I'm joining the faction of the site that says starting with pf-tek isn't really that great, and for most people, more expensive than other methods.
