Does my recipe look right?
    #11379223 - 11/03/09 08:55 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I'm about to prepare my first 2 64 quart doubletubs tomorrow and I was gonna do a 2:2:1:1 + 5-10% (coir/verm/coffee/poo + gypsum) ratio.

I'm using the spawncalc and it's saying that I need roughly 24 quarts total. With a 1:3 ratio that means 6 quarts of spawn (7 jars because they aren't 100%).  So that also equals to 18 quarts of substrate so each part of the ratio equals 3 quarts and 5%-10% means .9 - 1.8 quarts of gypsum.

So, it's looking like:

6 quarts spawn
6 quarts coir
6 quarts verm
3 quarts coffee
3 quarts black kow
3.5 - 7 CUPS gypsum

It's just that this doesn't look similar to some of the other ratios I've seen with the amount of coffee in the cups instead of quarts and the gypsum being different (maybe 2 cups?).

Suggestions or input?  If there's a standard ratio using these ingredients that all of you guys use then I'm game.

(Oh and a funny story:  I stopped by a greenhouse today and asked for some hydrated lime and gypsum.  Told the lady that my grandmother just got some lawn and garden books and I was running errands for her.  The greenhouse lady started asking all sorts of questions and just came out and said "Man, it sounds like your grandmother doesn't know what the hell she's doin")

I see now that the 3 quarts of coffee equals to about 15% of the substrate mix and doesn't top the 30% max that I've seen around here, but the 5 cups of gypsum seems like a lot even though I've done the math on it.  Anyone else?

Sweet thx TK. I have a bag of coffee that one of the starbucks is holding for me. Surprisingly the one I called said they have someone go in for a big about every day. Other growers mayhap?   either way I'm gonna have to call ahead each time. That and I have a 35/45 gallon mono I'm gonna do this weekend so I gave to look up drying instructions to preserve the coffee.

for a referance I use this mix for bulk sub

1 brick coir
1 quart verm
1 cup spent coffee grounds
1 cup gypsum
pasteurized in 1 gal water (brings it to field capacity)

and spawn 6qts to that giving me a 4" sub level in an 18gal monotub.

thats a 1:2 ratio you want a spawn/sub ratio from 1:4 - 1:1  your seems to be 1:3
but Id use your 3.5 cups of gypsum not 7. :stoned:

hope that helps a lil.

yeah mine is 1:3 my first go around.  And your recipe looks pretty much like the standard one the I see around here.  What gets me is that some people also throw around percentages that are way different.

RR suggests 5%-10% per volume of gypsum right?  So if that means per volume of just substrate then (since I'm looking at 18 quarts of bulk sub plus my 6 quarts spawn) that would make it about 3.5 - 7 cups.  Way off from that standard recipe.  If he's giving 5% as a minimum then shouldn't it be used?  1 cup would be approx. 1.4% per volume of substrate.

I get how the verm can be anywhere up to 50% of the substrate and coffee anywhere up to 30% so that leaves a lot of room for variation.  Although I've read that verm is a nutritious food for myc, it can't be as much as coir or black kow, so should I drop that a bit and up the coir a bit?

Ahh and something important:  I have pelletized gypsum, is that gonna matter?

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, I'm just curious and musing aloud if anyone cares to discuss.

it would actualy be about 2.4 quarts but I used a whole quart b4 in my mix and it turned my substrate into a cement block.  but 4-6 cups wont hurt your amount of sub.

the more nutrients the better but verm is your water supply so dont cut it out to much.

I use pelletized gypsum also, what I do is use some of my pasteurizing water to soak the pellets and crush them up into a slurry then add it to your mix just after soaking your coir.

Ya, I wouldn't go more than 2 cups on the gypsum...seems like a lot off coffee too....i don't think I would use that much...

Ah ok 13:mushroom2: I didn't know the %s accounted for the spawn mixed in or not. What volume  of sub were u working with that 1 quart turned it into a cement block?  I definitely don't want that and if I use 5 cups (5%) gypsum then that makes a quart and a quarter.

Really, 1 part coffee seems like too much?

The recipe (except the gypsum which in doing by per cent) is the recipe I got from Truskool. I'm assuming he's had luck with it. Oh and TK have u used a recipe like 13s in comparison to yours?

12-13 quarts so I went just under 10% with 1 quart.

UHm yea 13's recipe is great.  Its really hard to compare I dont use only one race of cubes always different the only way to really compare and get an accurate comparison would be to use an iso which i havent done nor any intention.  The reason I gave you this recipe is cause I believe you wanted to use the composted manure. so   Iam sure you will have great results from this recipe or use another classic one such as 13's

No qualms with your recipe at all. I'm just curious

and jeeze of all the times to start screwing up... I forgot to heat my water first before adding my chunks of coir. So now I'm heating it already mixed and hoping that sucker doesn't catch fire before 170 degrees

Is there any test I can do to make sure all of the stuff I added (mainly all that verm) didn't throw off my water content?

Yeah I saw the field capacity post in another thread and ended up adding water until it was right. Well I wake up this morning and checked it and it looks like it needs more water again because I have to squeeze pretty hard for water droplets.  Add more?

Doh, no joke huh? I'll be sure to give it a good mix and see what it's like.  Lol, it sounds so easy right, but after waiting a month I'm paranoid about screwing it up.

And btw, my substrate smells like a coffee shop.  Yum
