Boletus? King? One is massive...
    #11378663 - 11/03/09 05:26 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Both found in deciduous forest, by the Willamette river, in Oregon. The big one is about 14" in diameter! The ugly one was nearly dead, pretty dry, actually, with a white cap and stark white pores. I'm thinking King with this one, but the other has yellow pores, and this massive underground stalk.

Yes I think so.  Reticulate stem, correct?

Reticulate? Uh....maybe barely? It has texture, that's for sure, but doesn't have that much reticulation. Either of them.

The caps of both are stained a bit red from the top moving down.

It's also worth mentioning that the only other species--and tons of them--was Amanita Muscaria.

Amanita muscaria is a great indicator species for Boletus edulis.

But do you also think that the big one is a King?

Both of the stalks are rock-solid and very much like a hard cheese in appearance.

The rims of the cap were touching the forest floor! It was buried against the trunk of a small alder. I could barely get my fingers in there to grab it and *yank* -- but I'm glad I did, the inside of that base is quite edible as well. Unless there is something I don't know....

The deep 1.5" pores...I discarded them on the big one, cooked them on the small one, but the stalk and rest of the caps was as pure as ever, once I cut off the dirty bits.

I tried drying the big one in a warm oven and the gills turned to mush, I actually took a bite of the mush, and it tasted just fine, but I threw it out anyway, it was just too slimy in texture.

Tastes great!
