lawn subs? or foe's?
    #11378777 - 11/03/09 07:42 PM (8 years, 18 days ago)

I know the pictures are crap but my camera wont get in focus and is crappy, tried using macro but it didn't help...
ill get a spore print up by later hopefully, the determining factor is usually the spore print correct? black/purple=sub brownish=foe? anyways I found these in my back yard growing from where i had mowed the lawn earlier in the week.

i haven't observed any bruising, and the stems seem to be a little thin and weak... info and answers are appreciated, please and thank you!

hard to tell. probably foes if stem is thin and weak. subbs tend to have a nice thick and sturdy stem. just a guess though

they can look very similar. just keep an eye out for thicker stems darker gills and jet black spore prints =P and perhaps check out http://www.shroomery.org/9608/Subbedhunter420s-Guide-to-Hunting-and-Identifying-Panaeolus-subbalteatus subbedhunters guide to subbs. its very good

ok im like almost 100 percent that the spore prints are jet jet black. i tried to take a picture of them but my camera makes it blurry or out of focus no matter what, its a piece... i put a black marker next to each print and the print was blacker than the marker...could it be subs? or still foes?

does you camera have a macro mode? if not, have you tried backing off a bit, say 2-3 feet?

if the prints actually are black, they are Panaeolus, and most probably Panaeolus cinctulus [subbalteatus].

none of us are going to be able to judge the color better than you, who have them in front of you.

for my part, i'm sold on black.

all of them were subs, i actually stomped most of them because i thought they were foes, I guess i should have waited for the print and a trusted id'er , oh well, ill know better next time... there is a new one growing in my lawn now that had the total sub look, and then stem is super meaty!
