Bacteria Prevention?
    #11377977 - 11/03/09 05:46 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I did not ever have bacteria problems until the store stopped carrying my old brand of WBS.
I am getting bacteria in every bag now.
I don't think it is in the spore syringes, they've all been sterilized.
I don't think it is in the spores, I used the spores last year with great results.

What would be a good way to prevent bacteria in the future?
Is it safe to use bleach in my grain soak water or is that outdated bad advice?

sounds like a problem with your sterilization procedure. you should't have to bleach anything if the WBS is getting fully sterilized. maybe sterilize some jars of WBS and make sure its not the syringes?

The grains are allowed to soak for 24 hours.
After soaking the grains are boiled for 5 minutes until about 5% have burst.
The grains are loaded into the filter patch bags and impulse sealed 4 times.
Pressure cooked for 2 hours.

I cant see anything wrong with my preparation method.

My pressure cooker is bulging and also leaks though. Should I chuck it and get another?

If your pressure cooker is bulging, you need to ditch it ASAP. Structural integrity is likely compromised. Not safe at all.

If you're worried your grains might be the problem, hold back a jar at each stage. For example, keep a control jar on the side after you inoculate. If your control jar doesn't contaminate, it's probably your spores or sterile procedure.

I suspect the bags are bursting or at least opening up pinholes due to the PC leaking.  If not, then your own breath is the most likely cause of the bacteria when you inoculate.
