using a tv as a computer monitor?
    #11375440 - 11/03/09 11:05 AM (8 years, 19 days ago)

i just bought a new video card for its video out.  it has the normal monitor plug, and s-vide0.  my tv uses rca a/v style.....after weeks of fiddling and talking to the people at the store where i bout a wire that is s-video to rca i have come up with picture but its black and white...no way for color.....how can i get this to work.  so frustrated after so long trying and nothing working, adn the store has not been able to tell me much of anything short of buy a new tv from us....

our tv works fine with video game consoles/dvd players, but is not working with the computer.....

any ideas?  thanks in advance for any input!!!

If you have a regular tube style tv set, not sure if this is the greatest idea. According to most data, A regular tv set(not plasma, lcd, or whatever new techs) will experience burn in, alot of computer graphics are static and the signal is strong. I could be wrong on any of this, I am not a technician.

But I really just wanted to add that, my workstation is hooked up to a 46 inch LCD screen. My keyboard and mouse are wireless. Its sweet as fuck. I got old school video game emulators and wireless controllers. My chair is the recliner. I can watch netflix instantview on it. Its pretty darn nice. I'd go for it. But I'd be careful if it was a regular tube tv set.

if you have an older crt monitor the highest resolution youll get is 1024x768 regardless of the size and it will be pretty fuzzy. it does a pretty bad job as a computer monitor.

that being said, i have a computer hooked up to my tv. the only purpose it serves is to download tv and movies from bittorrent so i can watch from the couch.

i use xbmc to act as a good frontend to my media. it is a free download and available for win, mac, and linux.

i set up ssh access so i can remotely send a .torrent file to the machine.

my torrent client "watches" a folder for new .torrent files. when it finds a new one its starts the download.

for tv i use a feed reader to subscribe to shows using http://www.ezrss.it. the only feed reader that would work that i know to run on win, mac, and linux is thunerbird with the infoRSS extension.

oh and if you need a cable i would use a vga to rca.

EDIT:
i forgot to add. my computer sends a text message to my cell phone to tell me when a download finishes

Whenever I hook my computer up to my TV I just use the S-Video cord and it works perfectly.

No sound comes out of the tv though but the picture is fine.
