Anyone know how US Visas/Citizenship works?

So, I'm dating this Japanese chick, she's been in the US for 5 years.
I don't know ALL the details, but she came here on a student visa, and something about having to find a job that supports your visa or something?
She works full time but they don't support her visa, whatever that means. I don't know.
But her visa is about to expire and she's making it seem like its super hard or close to impossible to get it renewed without going back to Japan.
She's afraid her visa is about to expire and a lawyer is telling her it doesn't look good?
And saying becoming a US citizen is really hard? wtf, we got mexicans walking across the border here that get their citizenship no problem somehow.
Anyone familiar with how all this shit works? I thought it was a simple process. Apparently 911 made things harder.

a friend of mine growing up (he lives down the street and is cute as hell, always have thought he was cute) is gay, married this chick so she could get citizenship cos his family paid him to do it. you just have to stay together for two years and mostly just pretend to be married. i mean, you actually have to get married legally, but it doesn't have to be an actual marriage, if that even makes sense.

it's how i'm going to get citizenship when i finally make it to NZ. it's the easiest way.

Me to. Cute Japanese chick would be awesome. Ive had a few opportunities but they've always been of the conservative type so i knew the relationship would be a hassle in the long run. They are so beautiful though and really nice personalities.
