My chemist told me when I talked to him about extracting DMT from the mimosa hostilis root bark he sugested I grab 1 kilo (1000g).  I asked about how much it was supose to make and I was told very small amounts.  out of 1000g he said you would be lucky to get 1/2 oz...  He may have said a full oz, however either way your coming up 1/36 or 1/72 of inital mass you start with.  My chemist also told me that the mhrb has the highest volume of DMT per pound.  Whith this said he began to explain its only about 5% of its mass at best. 

I have seen it twice... first time it was orange and was some fire.  the second time it was like a greyish color and not so good....  Not realy my tea of choice so i dont know to to much about it, but this is what i was told by a chemist who I would credit as reliable.

you have some pretty high expectations from your mhrb, 14 grams from a kilo? your "chemist" doesn't know what he's talking about.

To clarify, the OP is correct in expecting a 1% yield. 14 grams from a kilo is beyond mis-information.

The smell of flowers! That rung a bell. I remember reading one time at DMT Nexus about someone who had inactive bark that produced DMT that smelled very fragrant and flowery. Not only did it yield low but what was there was inactive.

This could very well be a possibility, depending of the level of fragrance. Although some people just feel that really clean DMT does in fact smell a little flowery.

Additionally, if the bark is old (maybe sat on the vendor shelf for too long) a lot of the DMT could have been oxidized into DMT N-Oxide.

If this is the case that could be where your yield is going. During the freebase conversion and extraction one does not pull the N-Oxide with the DMT, and if most of your DMT is oxidized, this will dramatically effect your yield. I've seen peoples DMT salt yields disappear when they try to convert to a freebase, N-oxide being the culprit.

Just keep your materials, keep trying to get SOMETHING out of the bark you used.

If it is a no go, call the vendor, offer to return what you have left, and haggle them to give you some more bark.

Tell them they dye the bark produced wasn't very potent or colorful and you would like to do an exchange.
