Help me with dread locks
    #11372029 - 11/02/09 07:31 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I'm going to get dreadlocks, but I don't know where to start.

I understand that I will need to backcomb weekly for about 3 months to a year in order to get solid mature dreads but, how should I do a proper backcombing?

My hair is probably 7inches - 1 foot long, I never use conditioner, it's brown and naturally wavy and curvy.

For the initial backcombing does anyone have any suggestions? I want to get really thick long dreads, my hair is long enough but I cannot find a good website about backcombing and how to prepare and do it.

Any suggestions?

You should only backcomb once any more and your just ripping the knots out.
And not to dispose of your advice but those are probably the worse sites in term of dreadlocking. They offer the buy dreadlocks now route! Not happening.

try this site if your interested.

Let em grow naturally. Might take longer but you don't want salon dreads.

you can use bee's wax to get them started. people use bee's wax to clean there dreads(clean dreads? double-negative, i know), but its also used to form them.

I'm going to backcomb my hair tomorrow (Well I'm going to go to a salon place and have a guy I know do it for me)

But how do I wash freshly backcombed hair? I understand that I need to use minimum residue shampoo and greasy hair does not hold dreads (which seems like a paradox)

So how do I wash it? Rub shampoo around the backcombed locks?

Are backcombed locks very delicate? Do I need to take my sleeping position into consideration for the first few months?

neglect you hair. forcing your hair to dread will make you look gay and even whiter.

if your hair wants to lok up it will.

once it starts to get tangled roll it between your palms and use yer fingers to "backcomb"

a hair style thats about neglect should not require so much care

I'm not white for starters, thanks for the concern though.

So your saying if I let my hair get greasy, I can roll and backcomb it more naturally then?

Edit: thats what ill do, sounds better.

Yeah. My hair is long and super thick and curly.
If I leave it alone for two or three days it gets so tangled I have to pull the knots apart.
Id have dreads forming in a week.

Whiteness+dreadlocks is almost always a no no.

It works sometimes I suppose. In the end most whites end up looking like a wook.

Yes! Keep that shit natural yo. You know how you can tell a black woman is in showbiz? Her hair is straightened. It really doesn't look that good, white folks love it though.
