3 hours of pasteurization
    #11372890 - 11/02/09 11:25 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

Would it be a good idea to tightly pack wheat straw, dehydrated hpoo, and coir into a pot and pasteurize in 160 degree water for 3 hours (since it is tightly packed)?

If you think it is a bad idea, please explain why.

Gracias!!!

3 hours is fine as long as the moisture content does not suffer

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

are you pouring in boiling water? Or putting it on the stove? Or in the oven? It kinda matters... Sounds like you are looking to make some bulk sub either way Check out Ozz's pictures. He goes through it pretty nicely.

It would be done on the stove top at about 160 degrees.

It would be a pillowcase method done in a pressure cooker on the stove top at about 160 degrees.

if your moisture content is at field capacity then put it all in your pot and bring the temps up to 140-160F for at least an hour for pasteurization.  just put a meat thermometer in the center to make sure all your substrate is at the correct temps.  to high and your sterilizing to low and your doing nothing but waisting time.

it could take just 60min or 3 hours that depends on if you can keep it at pasteurization temps (140-160F) for an hour and not have to keep adjusting temps all the time.:stoned:

Emphasis on the thermometer, it matters how hot the center is more than the outside!

I've only done one bulk grow, and I pasteurized my Coffee/Coir/Verm mix by pouring in boiling water into a kettle based on this kind of idea;

It's the same idea as in the Ozz tutorial. Hot water into bucket, allow bulk sub to insulate itself, the temp will stay in pasteurization range long enough to be good. Just practice sterile technique and you're golden.

This is what was concerning me.  Since it is so packed, how long would it take the center to get hot?  That is why I think 3 hours would be good.  But now I am curious if anything bad would happen to the outer parts of the compost if it is at 160F for 3 hours.  I don't really think so, but I'd figure I'd check with you wonderful shroom heads :1up:

yeah the edges could dry out and burn.

just use a meat thermometer in the center and do 2 batches so its not packed so tighly.

Two batches is your best bet. Patience rewards many in this hobby, or so I've seen.
