Cool thread, i always wanted to try this. Just about moved into a house with a slackline awhile back...

This piqued my interest, how much does a line or the equipment to put one together, cost?

Well, it really all depends on how primitive of a setup you want. Some people are really into having a lightweight setup that is easy to travel with and packs down very small with very few pieces of gear (carabiners).

other people like to use cranks to achieve the tautness desired in the webbing. this is the first type of setup I had, and it ran around 80 bucks for the whole thing. (included 50 feet of webbing, 2 tree slings, ratchet, and tension adjuster). but keep in mind if you shop around you can find these all much cheaper if you buy them as individual components.

and other people like to use super bomb-proof setups that involve alot of gear, backup gear, pulleys, ropes, padding, etc. that can be very expensive depending on the length of the webbing used as well.

A good length to start out with is 50 ft of webbing, but dont hesitate to go for higher if you want. At first the act of even standing on the line is very daunting. I learned without anyone spotting me, but it is generally a good idea to at least have someone around to help you balance the first few times you try.

personally I just set the line up and tried over and over, taking multiple nutshots from the line and getting whipped in general by gravity and my lack of balance at first.

once I got the hang of mounting the line and actually being able to stand there, that is when things got very interesting and fun. progressing became faster and faster until next thing I knew I was trying shit that I wouldnt have imagined on that first day, like jumping on the line, sitting and standing back up, yoga, tai chi, surfing (moving rapidly back in forth in huge swooping motions. extremely fun), and just generally silliness and fun. It is a most excellent way to achieve a new center of balance that will stay with you much like learning to ride a bike. Once you get it, you get it. And from there on out you just gotta stay slack.

anyway, just shop around on google for slackline kits and see what looks right for you. there are tons of options out so shop around. and have fun! dont give up when you fall flat on your ass a hundred times, just keep trying, it is totally worth it.

Great, thanks Subject!

Just 1 question: How long did it take you to get the hang of it? (able to walk across the line, repeatedly and in control without falling?)

It took two days before I could stand on the line and  I learned how to walk the whole thing back and forth, including turning around on the line in the next few days. So after that first week of taking alot of falls and feeling like you can't balance for shit, something will click in your brain and you will just get it. Like I said it is very much like the epiphany of learning how to ride a bike for the first time without training wheels.
Also something interesting that I found is that it was easier for me to learn how to walk backwards on the line before I learned how to walk forwards.

Now, I have seen people who have successfully learned how to do the whole shebang in an hour or two. Some people just have a natural affinity for it and it comes very easily to them. Others, like my girlfreind have been trying for months to no avail. But it really all depends on how dedicated you are to actually doing it.

getting very stoned beforehand may help as well, and as I stated in the first post, doing it under the influence of a psychedelic is simply fucking fantastic, and it takes on a whole new level of meaning.

good luck and have fun!

I love slacklining! you can get a really cheap good set for about 40-50 if you just do a home rig. I have 50 foot of webbing and 5 biners. I bought 70 foot to start with then cut off two ten foot sections to make slings and that saved me some money. I highly recommend it to anyone.
