Whats up with these pins? (update: mutant experts help)
    #11372154 - 11/02/09 07:51 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

This is my first time growing PE, but i've never seen pins like this before. Is this normal? Are they just extremely wide?

This is a quart mixed with compost from High Mountain Compost ( http://www.highmountaincompost.com/index.php ) uncased.

Spores are PE from Spore Works ( http://sporeworks.com/store/catalog/Psilocybe-cubensis--Penis-Envy-p-16174.html )

how do these look?

Those are mutants. They are just as edible and potent. Wait until they get bigger and harvest them like regular mushrooms. PE is known for creating mutants like those.

Hm interesting. So they are going to just grow in any random direction huh.. Well it seems all 3 of my casings are going this way so I suppose the spores are to blame then right?

check out this thread.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11262541/

It's just genetics. The spore were viable, but this is just the dice roll you got this time. The 2nd might turn out to be regular penis looking mushrooms. Don't be discouraged, everything was done right if you got this far. As soon as you get a good specimen clone it, or do some isolations agar to ensure more normal flushes.

Right on, yeah I found this thread also http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6565219#6565219

his flush looks a lot like mine. I just hope I get some good weight. I also have a big tub with 4 quarts mixed with compost that should start pinning in a few days, this has the same genetics. I wonder how those are gonna turn out.

thanks gents

this has the same genetics. I wonder how those are gonna turn out.

you sure about that ? just because they came from the same syringe dont mean they have the same genes ... unless you isolated it on agar first , or cloned it ( though even that surprisingly doesnt produce pure genes) its not the same

well actually cyantific yield is very important to me .. but it still looks like i'll be having a good sized pinset.

well all I ment was the tub came from the same syringe. So far 3 casings have these mutants and they are all from the same syringe so chances are it'll happen with the tub.

Someone really needs to see if we can get an iso from those mutants.  Do they produce spores?  Are the spores viable?  If you clone one can you get an entire tub of them?  I would love to see these turned into a viable strain.  We could call it P. Cubensis Monkey Nut strain!

Here's an update:

I dont know why everyone is stoked on mutants, I think they suck they screw up the yield.

Here's a few shots, as u can see it there is some strange discoloration, kind of a bluish blackish, i've seen this on other mutant pictures. I guess I should pick soon. Also here's my tub.

id let those go a while longer, wait until you dont see growth for a day or two to harvest, during my PE grow the mutants were the highest yielding shroomies, thick as fuck

Why is it that as soon as someone mentions being disappointed with a yield they're automatically selling? Some people just get a thrill out of a big harvest. I don't know the ops intentions but it's not right to make blind assumptions.

I am working with Z strain right now and am having alot of mutants pop up too.
I thought it may have been an RH problem but after resetting my hygrometer I found I was wrong.

Well FAE problem is possible but i'd had many many grows with the same conditions and this is the first time it's happened. What does that discoloration mean?

mutants are caused by genetics, and theyre often discolored. but theyre great! just as good as normal fruits, and in my experience with PE sometimes way denser and bigger! so count your freakish mutant blessings :bigjoint:
