What to do for facial redness?
    #11370465 - 11/02/09 06:00 PM (8 years, 23 days ago)

Anyone else have this problem? Ever since I have been 15 or so, I have had permanent redness on my nose and cheeks - it has been getting progressively worse since it started (I am now 20). It looks similar to this picture http://www.aurorahealthcare.org/healthgate/images/si55550340.jpg , but covers the whole nose. I have been diagnosed with Rosacea with Seborrheic Dermatitis (tested negative for Lupus)

The skin is red and very sensitive, with a few visible veins on the nose. Pretty much anything makes me flush: heat, cold, stress, most foods - so I have tried to cut out most sugars from my diet (no soda, candy, ect...) I have seem plenty of dermatologists and have had absolutely no luck. It has really taken a huge toll on me socially as you can probaly imagine. When I'm flaring up I really can't stand to be in public.

I really feel depressed hopeless about it (especially the fact that it's just getting worse) & want to be able to enjoy life without always worrying about how bad my skin looks. I have tried everything doctors can offer (except lasers, which are meant for mostly broken veins) - the only thing that offered ANY relief was steroid cream, which cleared it up completely for one day - but it came back with a vengaence shortly after. I have also tried homeopathy with no results. Any ideas at all???

Try drinking, Sarsaparilla tea, Reishi tea, Grade B Maple syrup and lemon juice tea or good barrel aged Scotch or any combination of the previous list.

I know how you feel, man.  I had the butterfly pattern redness on my face for years.  It would get really bad in the winter when the air got really dry.  And if my hair got too greasy.  It was the worst when I had a full beard.  If you have oily hair like me, be sure to wash it daily with some kind of dandruff shampoo with pyrithione zinc in it.  I used to take long, hot showers, which made my face really red when I got out.  Ever since I started taking shorter, cooler showers, the redness got better.

I wash my face once or twice a day with those orange transparent Neutrogena facial cleansing bars.  Warm water, then lather the face, rinse with cold water. You should do it gently at first if the skin is still inflamed. After washing and drying my face at night, I apply a little Neutrogena oil-free moisture cream to the usual trouble areas.

Stay away from sugars, caffeine, and too much alcohol, wine or milk (still not sure if avoiding milk is beneficial).  I started exercising more often too, to improve circulation.  I even tried a little meditation to help with stress and anxiety.

Hope that helps.  I tried soooo many things over the years to combat the redness, a lot of trial and error, so I know how frustrating it can be.

i dont have that problem exactly but i know that putting green on your skin combats redness - for example when i drink i go bright red  obviously an entirely different problem but i rub a green foundation into my face and voila i no longer go red, at all. so that might reduce what it looks like. but u shud probably go to see a specialist really

Did you try the Sarsaparilla? or any of the other things I mentioned?
I don't think I have Rosacea, but I'm pretty sure I have Seborrheic Dermatitis and the Sarsaparilla kicks the shit out that particular affliction. 2 or 3 grams steeped in tea, and that crap is gone the next day. The other teas I mentioned also work well. Not as good or as fast as the Sarsaparilla, but they work.
I don't even make tea any more, I just put a pinch of the Sarsaparilla in my gum, about an a gram and do a saliva extraction, once or twice a week.

@Falcon: Honestly, I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to preparing/purchasing herbs. Would the easiest place to accquire Sarsaparilla be in a health food store? I definately want to give this a try, & want to exhaust my options before risking it with laser treatment. When you took the tea, how long did it offer relief? I don't want to bomb ou with questions, but what is a saliva extraction? Thanks for the advice

@pseudonym88: I have actually tried a few different brands of green foundation. Problem with rosacea is it has left the sensitive skin with enlarged pores, so every time I put on the foundation it just looks like my pores are clogged with green shit :tongue2:

check out this website

http://www.pratimaskincare.com/

there's a test on it and you can find out your ayurvedic skin type.  if you take it and report back to me i will make some product and vitamin herb recommendations.

i had acne well into my mid-20's and NOTHING ever helped.  i went for one consultation with this woman, followed her advice for diet, lifestyle and skin care products, and my skin has been soooo clear ever since.  even scars i had from old breakouts are gone.

A store that specializes in herbs is best, co-ops and health food stores sometimes carry it also. You can also get it by mail on line, if you don't live near a store that carries it. Also try stores that sell homebrewing supplies, they might carry it, it is used as an ingredient in making root beer.
With Sarsaparilla it takes about 12 to 24 hours till I get relief. I'll take some 2 days in a row and then once every week or two.
Ha, a saliva extraction, use the sarsaparilla the same way as people use chewing tobacco.

OP, I'm apalled by the shitty responses. Anyway, I suffer from similar condition mixed with acne and other skin problems. I highly suggest you check out this UV light I use daily which has definately helped with the reads. Just google facial UV light. I also suggest going to see an aesthetician who does facials. Also, highly recommend this state-of-the-art skin cream - Meladerm in combo with vitamin E. Sorry for no links. Hope this helps.

You mentioned that you have cut sugar from your diet, but I wonder what the rest of your diet contains?  Rosacea is an inflammatory condition, and Sebhorreic Dermatitis is a fungal infection.  Both conditions respond well to a low-glycemic-index, anti-inflammatory diet.

Check out this site re: Glycemic Index:
