Which camera to get?
    #11367406 - 11/02/09 06:23 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I wanna take pics of my mushies and post it here, but I got a 1.3 MP cam which does no good, so I'm wondering what's the minimal MP I need to buy to get a great quality close up shot?

Thanks

Megapixels have nothing to do with shooting close up pictures with good quality. Buy a Dale and a macro lense and you'll have great results. If your not willing to pay the roughly $700+ that will cost, go to an electronics store and try out several point and shoot cameras on macro mode and see what results you get with something small.

And this shouldn't be in cult. Section

Canon > *

If you want quality, get a DSLR.  The Rebel line is good for beginners.  If you're not looking to spend that much money, pick something from their SD line.  MP don't mean shit.  Lens quality is what will make your pictures better.

Yea, if you want to spend 1,000 dollars on a camera just take close ups of mushrooms, do that....(really though, if you have the time to learn, and the money to spend, a dslr will be the best, period)

Otherwise, this flikr thread will point you in the right direction for nice point and shoot cameras, with great macro settings, for under 500 bones...

Peace

It all depends on your budget. because DSLR's will get expensive,  the good lenses (not all lenses) cost  over $1000 for other uses, telephoto, portrait, etc., external flash $400, etc, etc....  but a decent macro (canon 100mm macro) can be had for about $400 secondhand.

I

If you gave a budget I am sure other people interested in photography will be able to give better opinions.

I can only speak for canon. because that is what I've used up until recently.

Over the last year I've sold all my photog gear.

I will say this though.  good camera equipment holds a nice resale value.  Also, for anyone looking to buy/sell canon photography gear on the second hand market, check out and register at this website: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ ; its free they are not involved in the trade other than holding the marketplace thread, all trades are done via PM or emails, etc...  paypal is the way most transactions are usually made. lastly, in order to place things in the marketplace, you need to be a member for a set amount of time (30 days I think), and have a minimup post amtount; so, it might be worth registering for later down the road

The thing is when most people do their homework, all they see are big numbers in front of the resolution and they're sold.  "Ohhh, Sony uses Carl Zeiss lenses and all of their P&S cameras are 10+MP, they must be amazing!"  But like nearly everything else Sony produces, their cameras are overpriced crap.  Their auto white balance blows hard, the pictures tend to stay on the grainy side of things, and although Mr. Zeiss does produce some quality glass, none of it makes it way into the consumer-level point and shoot camera.  I'm a diehard canon user, but I'll be the first to tell you my Nikon S2 is the most durable piece of electronics I've ever owned and it takes great pictures, too.  I bought it before Canon's SD line was so affordable.  The fact is, Nikon and Canon both make great products, and as you get in the prosumer level, the line blurs a little. But, for the money, you'll get more out of a Canon P&S.  You get decent glass, a good sensor, and it's becoming more common to get great image stabilization as well.

I use a Nikon S560 because it was not to pricey and it takes good enough shots. Cant say that I know much about cameras but I like it.

its not so much the camera. its how you use it. i would try to find a cheap camera that has a threaded lense for attatchments. then get a macro lense. a mini tripod is also a good idea, you can get those really cheap sometimes.

unless you are also interested in photography as a craft and an art then you would want to invest in some quality equiptment.

DSLR cannon or nikkon.
a few lenses and some filters.
a sturdy, quality, all purpose tripod.

you could also just email BH photo and ask the sales department the most cost effective setup that they stock.

they also have a customer service #

i dont work for them or anything but they are a huge company and they seem to have everything worth having. audio. video. and sound recording.

Here ya go OP, this is a way better link for you, thanks Engadget.

Quote:

the A1100 is one of the cheaper feeling cameras in the group, its two-tone plastic body not turning any heads and that plastic shell feeling flimsy in the hand -- you can hear it creaking and rattling when recording videos.

Sorry, Engadget just doesn't suck anyone off.  If you're looking for canon praise, this isn't the article for you.  Like I said before, there are a lot of cameras out there man.

Also, there's been a lot of buzz around the Panasonic DMC-ZS3.  You be the judge.  I hear Olympus made a good one too.
