Whatever was, was :: Whatever will be, will be
    #11368960 - 11/02/09 02:43 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I don't really know if it matters what your outlook on determinism or free will is to feel some amount of comfort from these statements when it comes to silencing fears or worries.  What is there to fear or worry about considering these?

I try to deal with whatever happens now. The past and the future are related to it anyhow.
Taking care of what presents itself from moment to moment, as best as i can without losing my concentration, is my way of dealing with what was and changing what will be.:smirk:

"changing what will be"

If you try to change the future it doesn't really change the fact that whatever will be will be.  It might be the case that had you not done what you did, what will be would be different from what could be.  No?

Not all of us are as clever as you.

Besides, 'whatever is redundant is redundant' is redundant!

I am not sure how something plainly obvious is either comforting or uncomforting.

What 'will be' could involve horrible pain and mental anguish

Yeah but worrying won't change that.

It will if you decide mental angiush and pain is a good thing and you learn to enjoy it. Whatever will be, will be, but you can change the way how you perceive what will be completely changing the experience.

I don't gain comfort from tautologies.  What will be, will be is true, but at least from my possibly illusory perspective of having free will it seems as though my actions now will effect my future, and thereby it is most beneficial to my long-term happiness if I do worry about the consequences of my actions.  Of course, too much worry can also be detrimental to your well-being so it's a bit of a fine line.

What does worrying itself help?

Is it not the things we do when we worry?

Do we need to worry to do those things?

Replace fear with worry in those questions, same result.

If I don't worry about the future then it is quite likely that I will become unhappy at some point by not appropriately choosing my present actions.  Note that I'm using worry synonymously with be concerned about.

Well its your personal choice to see value in worry, I do not and so when I do become worried it passes, and I can make my decisions unclouded by it.

If I worry too much about the future it clouds my decisions.  If I worry too little this means that I don't give a fuck about what happens in the future and this usually has bad consequences.

"  If I worry too little this means that I don't give a fuck about what happens in the future and this usually has bad consequences. "

Thats what I'd call a false dichotomy.  I can be totally carefree but focused as I want.

If you're totally carefree about the future then this by definition means that you don't care what happens one way or the other.  Some modicum of worry/care/concern is necessary.
